Post Toyota vehicle recalls double in 2005

Toyota said its records show 2.4 million vehicles recalled this year. The recalls are the most for Toyota in the U.S. in a single year.

Ford on pace to have the most recalls of any automaker, data show, with more than 6 million, fueled by the September recall of 3.8 million trucks and sport utility vehicles. Recalls for DaimlerChrysler AG and General Motors have declined this year.

A small shred of positive news for GM.

How is that positive news for GM? The fact that Toyota recalled vehicles doesn't actually improve GM's vehicles.

It's positive news that the number of recalls for GM declined. The other recalls going up or down has nothing to do with positive/negative for GM.

It'll take 5 recalls to affect Toyota. Once you built a reputation like they have anyways. Now if their tires started having high speed blowouts and killing folks (explorer), then they might get some attention.

Yep. You would think that the continus lack of air bag deployment deal would keep hurting them, but it doesnt. Its gunna take a break down of a major system while driving in order to hurt Toyota, i.e. blow outs, engine malfunction, brakes locking up, and its gunna have to be big, like another millon or so vehicles. Throw in a spontanious combustion in there, and you have yourself a lost company.

ProudPony posted in a thread awhile back about Lexus IS330s having a very major problem where a few people were killed, but the company refusing to do anything about it or even aknowledge there was a problem.

But the media would be all over that situation if it were GM or Ford. What made/makes the media and all the car mags favour stupid imports anyways?! Do they actually have it out for domestics or something?!

I wish people would open their eyes and realize that GM's aren't "built like they used to" ... they're better .

Toyota has taken notice of the increase in recall's and and the competitions gaining in quality, but they're pointing the finger at their foreign plants and rapid hiring of new workers at "home".

Well, I would imagine it wouldn't be suprising for Toyotas number of recalls to increase as they gain market share. I also don't think it is really effective to compare the amount of recalled vehicles per manufacturer for any given year as the model cycles are all different.

No, but it sure hurts the Perfect and Pristine image of Toyota making an unbreakable car that runs forever and engineerd by the Gods.
Its a price you pay for greatness. Also, there is an article I just read on GMI that talks about how this guys Prius lite on fire while staying overnight at a Toyota dealer. There is reports of teh battery electrolite leaking out, causing a "master alarm light" to come on. There is some speculation that the fire was caused by this electrolite.
There is my spontantious combustion.
Its really gunna take 3 big hits, I mean direct hits to take them down. Not something that could or couldnt have been caused by driver error, but something like the car falling apart due to cheap steel and welds. Something that has to scare the bejesus out of someone, and that someone are the mindless and brainless Toyota fans.
Yes Threxx...thats means you.

Re: Toyota vehicle recalls double in 2005

Lets see current recalls at Toyota..

Tc , the sweet sunroof can shatter (the front most piece), has to be removed and reinforced

Newer trucks, Ball-joints, both, with alignment

Older trucks, Steering rod and alignment

Siennas, seat-belt in rear, radiator (mostly done i think), high pressure lines, rusting doors

Prius, current gen, computer reflash as well as the hybrid battery needing removed, clean, inspected etc..

Celicas, not sure what it is, but they are still coming in.

Recently for certain cars they have been taking back the old oil filters for some sort of warranty.. dunno why.

Echos, floor pan rotting out

Corollas (and Camrys?) Replacing the cats due to sulfur smell (4 cyl)

The new avalons are having all sort of weird problems. Plus overall quality has dropped quite a bit. Most of the new 4runners has a slight shimmy in the wheel, some are bad, havent had a way to fix them yet. Not to mention if one of your cats go bad, you have to buy a factory one, as the aftermarket ones will not keep the check engine light from coming on. Big dollars there.

I've never pretended Toyota was perfect.

What is sad though is for somebody like you to be insinuating that I'm brainwashed by Toyota. Might wanna look in the mirror at that one. It seems to me that 90% of the people on this forum including yourself (and for a good reason, this is the future gen/news, GM forum) are far more brainwashed than I could ever be about one brand.

My father in law is about sick of the domestics on his own regard because of some horrible luck he's had with his 03 Expedition and 04 Tahoe, and is ready to jump on a Toyota Seq any day now, but I keep trying to get him to wait and check out the GMT-900 Tahoe when it comes out next month and give it a fair chance.

If I was brainwashed and felt Toyota was perfect, I wouldn't be doing that. When's the last time you had a close friend or family member gung-ho on buying a domestic and you encouraged them to wait and check out a new foreign model that was about to come out and may be something they'd like better? Most likely... never.

That's where we differ. I only come across as the foreign nutcase on this board because I choose to, instead of repeating the mindless repetitious pro-GM ranting that everyone else here seems to well more than have covered, I choose to play the devil's advocate.

You know anasazi? The guy everyone seems to say is anti-domestic/pro-*** just like me? He has been accused of being a GM-nuthugger on other open-format (non-specifically car branded) boards before. Now tell me how that happens if y'all think he's so anti-domestic?

Step back and realize that to a extremist ring-wing republican, a libertarian probably comes across as a "scumbag liberal", but in reality libertarians are closer to the right wing than the left.

It's all about perspective.

What about the wheels shearing off the hub at high speed (Aveo)?

That's what they get for importing a Korean car to add to their line-up. (Aveo's are 1 of the 3 cars from Dae-woo, right?? )
