DVD Player setup: indash or portable DVD player?

I've been talking about putting a computer in my car but that's just so much work for something I can't even use, so I decided to get a DVD player with LCD screen. I know for a fact I am getting an external amp so here is what I was thinking to avoid spending too much cash:

1. Get a portable DVD player. They are about $200 which is great, can be used for other purposes, and I can remove it quickly to prevent theft.

2. Get an in-dash DVD player and get a screen and mount it somewhere with velcro so I can remove it when not in use. The nice part is the controls are easy to access and when I turn off the car, I don't lose my spot in the CD I'm playing (which matters when I have a DVD with 4.7GB of music on it).

So what do you guys think? I'm not looking to spend a ton of cash, I just want a good stereo with alot of options (mp3 CDs, CDRW, DVD, etc).

I vote for the in-dash setup. It makes for better overall system ergonomics.

Personally, I don't care where you put one, but you might consider that it will probably be illegal for any kind of video screen to be visible to the driver in the future.

I thought it already was illegal.

I don't think so in all localities. I do expect to see the same kind of pub about video screens as has been heard about cell phones in cars.

I would imagine it is illegal in all places since you know some idiot is going to be watching a movie, a good part is going to come on and the guy(/girl) is gonna turn and watch. I always see GPS clearly visible though, so I don't know.

Yes this sucks because i have an indash DVD and love it ... but soon it will probably be illegal. Thanks to the putz in Alaska (I think) who is now being charged with manslaughter. He was watching road trip in his vehicle when he crossed the center line and killed 2 people in an oncoming vehicle.
