Lightbulb How much is to much? cam and 383 w/ Vortecs

I have decided to build a 383 with my small block insted of plain old 355.
I saw the 383HT in the chevy high pro magizne for 8/02. I saw it and liked what I saw.
They were using .550'' lift with 1.6 rockers on a comp cam 282XE(modded vortec heads). I'm not guessing it's much of a daily driver engine.
449hp 480 ftlb of torque.
Any one have any Idea how much lift I could put on one of those engines?
I'm thinking that .550'' with around 230 duration at .050'' I'll still have a week end driver and not strickly a track machine, I'm guessing that .550'' is the street limit.
What cam rocker combo will get me around 10 mpg and killer bring the frount wheels off the ground torque?
Any ideas what that would sound like?
No vacucume what so ever also?
Would it work good for week end and nice sunny day driver?
I would like any info.
I don't mind that loping sound from big duration .

with a 383 you'll have to go pretty big before you kill low-end torque.
What you should probably look at is some of Cranes hyd. roller camshafts. Crane tends to keep a slightly wider LSA than Comp does on their cam. The wider LSA will increase low-end torque and idle vacuum.

This is a non-ecm combination?

Get something that maximizes the port velocity of the vortecs. I really like something with slightly shorter duration and about 4degrees less LSA than common. (108s and 109s sound good to me).

use a 1.6s to get it up to the .55 range with 220-228 degrees.

that cam is very streetable.. at least with EFI it is.

I have run up to .650 lift in a daily driver, and quite abit more duration.

As far as gas milage 12mpg would be nice.
For fuel induction it'll have a 4bbl 750-850 cfm carb (mech. secondarys).
That on top of a 2 plain intake.
lobe seperation, should I go with 108 for drive ability or look for some thing in the 114 range? Because I want to use a big power added, a 100hp+ wet shot of nitrous oxide most likly a 2 stage set up.
I don't think those soggin-dickeys moded vortecs(that's I want)can take .6'' lift.
I will go back to the books and look into more cams.

My friend built a 383 stroker for his Chevelle. AFR heads, 10:1. CC cam, 230/230 on 110 lobe sep. Lift was low 5's with 1.6 rockers. Duration affects low end and driveability more than lift. Stroker motors like a tighter lobe sep. Anyway, his car had good vacuum, decent idle. He had a 2500 stall and 4.10 gears Running 12.7's with no tuning so far.

if you want good power on the spray don't use a cam with a tight lsa. Go 110 at a mimimum.
