What's do you think about David Vizard's 90's head porting book???
It appears to have alot of good basic info. I'm a beginner. Will it lead me astray while home porting or should I follow it to be safe.
One thing I didn't like was his reccomendation to port straight down from the short side radius. Seems counter productive to guiding the flow???

Small block chevy heads already have a TOO short short side radius. Removing too much material there will hurt flow. I just pretty much followed Nuke61's web page, DIY head porting.I did my exhaust ports a little differant than his though. He used a 1406 Felpro gasket and matched to it(but not lowering the floor too much). If I opened my port walls to that gasket, It would have made a wall where it meets the header. I looked locally for the book your talking about, but couldn't find it. Sorry if this has been no help.

I have read some of his other books and thought they were yery helpful.
If this is a new one I would like to buy a copy.

The book is copyrighted 1991 so its not really new.
The title is "How to Build and Modify Chevrolet Small-Block V-8 Cylinder Heads"

That said I think its a decent book I just wish it was a little more up to date. A couple things bother me though. First, his 30degree valveseat idea is a little weird. Also his ported heads dont seem to be all that great IMO. He got ~240cfm out of a fully ported 186 casting which seems a little low IMO
Basically I think it will keep you from making the most common mistakes but dont think you'll be putting GTP out of business anytime soon either.

240 cfm out of a 186 head? And that's bad?
My sportsman II's only flow 243 cfm.
Anyways, Vizard has been around awhile, and is the man when it comes to making power with stock sbc parts.

That's 243@ 25" vaccum.
change it to 28" and that's excellent for the heads he's workin with and the mods that had been done. Basic, very basic.
Also, It's since been shown that the 30 degree seat will greatly increase low to mid lift flow which is excellent for torque and true street power with cams in the .500-.550 lift range.

That book is the one I read before home porting my heads, wound up with great flowing heads.

Whoops, I missed the 25" of vaccum part. Thanks for pointing that out, it makes me feel a little better about using his book as a guideline when I do my heads. I'm glad to hear Jeff likes it as well.

Using this book and some other information out there (including Nuke61's page), I picked up about 10% more flow above 0.300" lift from my LT4 heads. Didn't get anything worth talking about at lower lifts, but I didn't expect to. Basically, I cleaned up the bowls, slimmed down the valve guides, removed the rocker stud boss, and matched the intake to the head. The stock valve job seemed damn good, so I didn't bother messing with that. I cleaned up the chambers a bit, but there wasn't much opportunity to unshroud the valves much further - once again, seems like GM did their homework here.
I don't know if I'd say that this book is the end-all of head porting info, but it's definitely a good start. Anyone that knows more about porting probably isn't talking about it  If you're just looking to clean up the heads a bit, it's an excellent resource. Just don't touch the short-side radius on modern SBC heads

Eric, did you gain much ET with just the head job? I am going to try this, because I can't justify $500 more right now for CNC work if I take my time and do some shaping and put bigger valves in.
You guys do reccomend the larger valves, right?
How about the valve job? My machine shop will do anything I want to the valve job... is their some voodoo you would reccomend?
