Exclamation THIS is what being in a car-club is all about....w/in

This incident made me rethink my own safety when working underneath a car. my 87 Aerocooupe is sitting in my carport on jackstands for easy access to everything. I went today and bought 2 more to have a total of 6 stands underneath. I'm absolutely paranoid about something like this happening now.....I've got a son due any day now-I'd like to be able to raise him and watch him grow up. Lucky for Zac, he has no permanent damge from the accident.

The only time i work from under my car is to do oil changes, even then just incase the jack fails on me. I position this 2 1/2ft long steal horn/anchore looking thing up under the frame near where im wkring at just incase the jack gives out....

Kamaro L98, you need to invest in a set of good jackstands. NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER use a jack to support the car if any part of your body is going to be underneath it. Steel anchor thingy sounds questionable to me.

A lot of people use cinder blocks, I would frown on that too...they can break into chunks relatively easily. If you do use cinder blocks, place them on their sides so that the holes face upward, they are the strongest that way.

I use rhino ramps any time I'm going to be under the car...I feel safer with those than the jack stands. I use the jack stands only if I'm going to be taking the wheels off or I need to get the car extremely high (like for installing long tubes from the bottom).

There's just no excuse for not using good jackstands. They are very affordable and are a minimum safety measure.

I'd also like to add that everybody should have a set of safety glasses to use whenever under the car or grinding/drilling/sawing. A couple of years ago I was under the car drilling out a broken bolt and got a metal shaving in my eye and didn't know it. All I knew was that the next day my eye was red and itchy. I went to the eye doctor and luckily for me she found the shaving and scooped it off my eyeball. It had penetrated 3 of the 5 layers of the eyeball.....you go blind if it goes through all 5.

I know safety glasses aren't "cool", but its even less cool to be blind in one or both eyes.
