Ferrari 308 win, Camaro RS loss!

That's right, won against an 80's Ferrari 308 *no surprise there*, but totally lost to a Camaro RS Here's the story...
I was in town last weekend. I remember passing a silver RS *93-97* on my left as I turned from another stoplight some ways back. Well, apparently we were caught at another stoplight again and he looks over at me, and we give each other the 'nice car' nod. I throw him a 'what's up' rev, and he responds with a couple low revs, then one high one, and that's when I heard 'wheeeeeeee' on the last one! His car sounded excellent for a 6-cyl, that little whine really scared the hell outta me. He rolled down his window, looked at me and nodded straight ahead, then looked back at me. I decided what teh hell, it's not too often that you run into a charged RS. We wait for the green and punch it, he catches a perfect launch and immediately has 1.5-2 cars on me!!! He just kept gaining more cars on me and finally stopped when he had about 5. Wow! We caught each other at the next stoplight, and I insisted on knowing what he had under the hood, he said the charger of course *didnt say what kind*, upgraded suspension, full exhaust, CAI, lid, headers and cam and he shot a 50 dose of juice right after he launched. Put LOTS of money into that car, but what a fast one! I didn't mind losing to that. The other story involves a cocky guy in an 80's 308 in Columbia. We were both about to pull onto the interstate from the offramp and as soon as we get off this guy punches it and nearly hits me from the back to get around me. "What an ass" I thought. I decided to play with him I acc. a bit to catch up, then got beside him and started throwing revs. He looked over with that almost scared, "how dare you!" look and threw lots of really hard revs at me! It actually looked like he was stomping the gas pedal! His car sounded good and I know these things are really light with about 240 horses, so I thought it'd be a good race. I decided to take the lead and punched it and he immediately followed suit. We got up to 100 and his front bumper was at my door the entire time, we both stopped accelerating and he looked over with an extremely pissed 'fu ck you' face and I just smiled Now I can see that I won against a Ferrari! It was definitely a good race, though, and with a better driver I think he could have pulled better on me.

Sorry about that, I drive a 1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 A4. Moroso CAI, Hooker Cat back and removed MAF. It's for sale, by the way

Also, I did some research just now on a quest to find the specs on that Ferrari. I looked on supercars.net and it looks most like a 328 GTS. I just said 308 because I am familiar with what the 308 looks like and it looked similar to that. Apparently it looks as though I would have lost if he was a better driver. 260 hp with a weight of only 3170 lbs, sounds like a VERY close race for a barely more than stock LT1.

I don't really get how they're pulling all these low 1/4s? They are light cars and have a reasonable amount of horsepower. I am pretty sure he had a different exhaust though, he was a bit louder than most Ferraris of that kind I've heard before.

If you raced a 2 valve 308, you definitely would have won. I believe they were rated at 215-220 hp. The 4 valve ('83+ I believe) 308s were quicker, running low 14s @ around 100 in the 1/4. They were rated at 240 hp and weigh around 3000 lbs.) My dad has a 4 valve 308 and it's decently quick but definitely in the range of a stock LT1. Good kill.

Well, from what I've read it's anywhere from 15.0 in the 1/4 on up. Just seems really slow for a barely over 3000 lb car that is 240-260 hp. I agree, they are probably not geared that well for drag racing. Plus, that long ass shifter seems liek it would cause some problems, too...

No. It is a 3.0 V8...hence the 308. :P The owners manual for the 4 valve 308 says they run 14.0 @ 100 mph in the 1/4. That's about how fast the car feels...but MUCH more fun than driving an fbody.

Positive.

308 = 3.0L V8
328 = 3.2L V8
355 = 3.5L V8

See the connection?

If you don't mind me asking, what did your father pay for his 308, how often does he drive it and how are the maintenance costs? I ask because I'd like to own one someday. That Ferrari has always been my dream car, I LOVE the styling, especially those taillights. I've seen these cars going for as low as high 20s. My favorite one is the 308GTSi Quattrovavole with the black vents on the hood.

He paid $30k for the car 2 years ago with 30k miles on it. It is a red '83 GTB (hardtop) Quattrovalvole. The cars have to be serviced every 15k miles (timing belt, etc.) and the car just had it's 30k mile service when he bought it. I think that service is around $6k (but i can't remember for sure).

The car is a blast to drive. Even though it's much slower than my car, I would much rather drive the 308. The little V8 revving to 8k behind you (no other sound like it), the externally gated shifter and the looks you get - awesome.

He plans on buying a 355 in the next month or so - should be a whole new ballgame.

Good luck getting yours.
