Suggestions needed.. rear gears..
Hi all,
Looking for info / suggestions on new rear gears. I figure that this is a major modification that I need to make to really liven up the car (an 81 Camaro BTW).
I currently have an open rear with highway gears (2.73 I think), what would it take to put in better gears with a posi?
I'm thinking somewhere ~3.55 (I still need drivability since this is my daily driver).
Do I need to replace the whole rear? I know I need to change quite a few parts since it's a different carrier.
Who should I get to do the work? I heard rear-ends only in Burnaby is good. How much should I be looking to spend?
Thanks,
Grant

rear ends only will rip a new hole in ur wallet
ud want to buy a new carrier (posi) ... and possibly new axels if the ones u have in there are super crappy .. or wont work with the new posi but u should be able to find a posi that accepts the axels u got
so u'll need a carrier and a ring and pinion set
id say go with 3.73s .. i had them in my 79 with a M21 4 speed and they rocked .. but one thing i found is that the car ran outta breath way too quick .. so i hope urs reves higher than a bone stock 350 .. then u should be fine

That's what I thought. I seem to remember Rear-Ends Only being extrememly expensive.
Where else would you suggest?
Can I put a newer carrier/gears in my car?
I want to make sure I go somewhere that knows what they're doing (price is important, but I've learned it can get even more expensive when you have to do it multiple times).
Well, if the car runs out of juice then that's just another excuse for the next modification. =)

Grant

actually, i got a set of 3.42 gears for an 8.5 10 bolt. they are in mint shape and used to be in my camaro asking $125.00 CDN for the ring and pinion. so if you go tto a 8.5 i got some gears for you
first off which rearend do you have. The 8.5" stuff is pretty stout to begin with so might not need axles (dependind on hp of course) What are you planning as far as power etc.. No reason spending 300 bucks on axles if they are not needed. Not sure of good drivetrain shops up there so can't answer that one.

Thanks for all of the information!
I'm thinking that the majority of the cost is going to come from the labour charges. I'd rather not buy the parts separately right now since I'm personally not familiar with how everything should be going together.
I guess I'll have to save up as much as possible and then put the rest on the good ole credit card.
In the meantime please let me know if you hear of a good deal on a complete setup that will work.
Thanks,
Grant

u could always try and find a whole rear end at a wreckers that way u can have a posi and spare parts. i've had and '80 turbo trans am and an '81 formula firebird and they both came with posi 3.08 rear ends. just a thought
