Racing a M6? Please read!
I developed a 5th/6th/reverse lockout for the T56 six speed trans. I'm trying to gauge peoples interest and see if any one local is willing to try it.
I built it to solve the problem of my shifter nailing 3rd but the trans doesn't. I always ask people if they have seen this problem, and never came across anyone. It seems to be rare.
The lockout should also keep a 2-5 shift from occuring.
I fried my Centerforce and decided to commit to an automatic. I never got the chance to try it.
I made one prototype and I'm willing to make one or two more to give to people if they are willing to try it and provide feedback.
It works electrically, so a button is needed to access 5th/6th and reverse.
It's easy to install.
Please email me or post if interested.
Thanks

I'd be willing to give it a try. I race the car almost every weekend and would really be able to put it to use.
Also, could you possibly look at adding a arming switch so that a button is only needed temporarily while at the track?
I work up in the Utica/Washington area but live in Grand Rapids. Fairly local.

Cool, sounds like there some interest. I'll start making a couple more. I have to think about the arming switch. It's a pretty good idea.

I am not exactly shure what your talking about.
Personally I miss 3rd sometimes when racing (I have missed 3rd about 3-4 times, and 2nd once, no other gears).
But why would you need a 5th, 6th, or reverse lockout?
I mean it automatically locks out reverse once you get going (not shure what speed). And it seems to lock out each gear once you get out of its speed range (at least 1st and second).
And I have never shifted into the wrong gear (meaning 2nd to 5th, or 3rd to 6th, etc) while accelerating, exept the first 2 days I was learning to drive.
I would be willing to demo it, if I had a clue what it actually was for

Dolby109,
The main purpose is when you are shifting the trans like an absolute maniac.
When I would treat the trans with respect I would never miss a gear. It seamed like every time it counted, 3rd gear became a problem.
In my case, I think I would move the shifter foreward when it was in between 3rd and 5th. There is a gate under the middle cover of the trans that forces the shifter into 3rd or 5th. But before it gets forced, the pin that actually grabs the 3/4 or 5/6 rail is already heading in the middle of them. Once it started its path down the middle it couldn't return. The result was the shifter would be solidly in 3rd gear but neither the 3/4 or 5/6 rails were ingaged. Just from the feel of the shifter you could tell something was bending.
My idea was to take the reverse lockout that GM or Borg-Warner designed and extend it into 5th and 6th. This way you are gauranteed that your shifter is lined up for 3rd gear.
I still have to do a little more research. The prototype I made is from cold rold steel. It works well, but I can tell just from shifting it on the bench it will need to be hardend.
The other thing I need to research is the skip shift. My car is a 93 Z28 and it never had it, so I don't know how it works.
If any one can help with the metalurgy or the skip shift please let me know.
Thanks

I can get hardend cold rolled steel from work. I work at Fastenal Co. I can get it cheap to. Let me know some dimensions.
Oh here is a quick and easy way to fix the skip shift crap.

Thanks for the skip shift link and the offer for the metal. I wish I checked this board earlier, I already ordered some 4140. A metalurgist recomended it based on what I described to him.

Just wanted to let you guys know, I'm still working on this. The 4140 metal came in. Waiting on springs. Depending on how long it takes to heat treat the parts, I should have something within a week or two.

Today I recieved the springs (I ordered them over a week ago). I modified the prototype to work with the new springs. It seems to work pretty good on the bench. Tomorrow I'll start making 5 more and then it's off to heat treat.
Tanner, I'm definetly planning on sending you one. I know you're doing some slick shifting to pull that ET.
Thanks
