Fixing scratch - can I buff it out?

Hello all. I have a scratch that will need fixing (picture linked below). I don't really know much about paint to know my options. I was told that it could be buffed out. What do you guys think? If this is something I can do myself in my garage, can anyone provide a "how-to"? Or if anyone has any websites with step by step instructions for a scratch like this, I would appreciate it. Will need to know everything from A to Z... chemicals/products needed, hardware needed, etc.

Picture of scratch

Thanks everyone!

Re: Fixing scratch - can I buff it out?

sloppytot,
I have my autbody ticket and specialized in refinish/paint for many years.

My rule of thumb is that if you can feel it with your fingernail, it is too deep to sand/polish out. You can try but risk burning through the clearcoat and then you have a real problem.

I have used those kits you can buy where you build up paint in the chip or scratch, wetsand it level and polish it with relative success but it is tedious and not perfect. And again, if you are not careful you risk sanding through the clear.

PS, I can't see the pic so not much to go on.
