Post 95 z28

Hey Guys and Gals! Just picked up a 1995 z28 with 38,500 miles on it. Green, 6 speed, no power windows, locks or hatch, no cruise and no AC. Interior is spotless and exterior has some minor bumps and little scratches but overall the car is in Excellent shape for a 22 year old car. Original 1 owner car from NJ. Car was sold by a son-in-law that inherited it (drove it like 200 miles) and then sold it. I know there have been a lot of mods done to it and hope to get advice from all the knowledgeable people on this forum. I am a novice so hopefully I am able to learn a lot! Looking forward to the adventure!

Here is what I have figured out so far on the car.... Powerdyne SC, Meziere Electric water pump (that seems to be leaking from the weep), Larger injectors (not sure what size though), new push rods, springs and rollers, Gears appear to be 3:55 as that number is written on the rear axle and the Differential cover has been changed to a JEGS cover. I know I am missing some stuff but I am sure it will come up as ask for advice. Thanks!

Christian

Re: 95 z28

Welcome to CamaroZ28.com ! ! !

The stock rear axle assembly on a 4th Gen is a GM 7.625" 10-bolt. With the T56 manual trans, the stock rear axle ratio is 3.42:1. That is for 1994-2002. 93 was different. Other available factory ratios w/ auto trans or V6 were 2.73, 3.08 and 3.23. Aftermarket gears are available in 3.73, 3.90, 4.10 and 4.56. Have not seen a 3.55 gear set for the 10-bolt rear.

10-bolt cover

Stock rear is weak, and with the S/C they may have upgraded the complete assembly. A GM 8.875" 12-bolt is available as a direct bolt in, but available gear ratios are similar to the 10-bolt.

12-bolt cover is similar to the 10-bolt cover, except it has 12 perimeter bolts, rather than 10.

Another available direct bolt in replacement is the Strange/Dana 60. Available ratios include 3.54

Dana 60 cover

Some people opt for a Ford 9-inch, available as a direct replacement, and while there is a 3.50 gear set available, that rear does not have a rear cover.

The only 3.55 rear I remember is the 8.2" 10-bolt used in some 60's GM cars (had them in my 1966 GTO), but not a direct bolt in for a 4th Gen. Could be done with a lot of cutting and welding, but the 8.2" isn't a whole lot stronger than the stock rear.

Re: 95 z28

Just thought of another possibility. There were some outfits and private individuals converting a Ford 8.8-inch assembly. That has an available 3.55:1 ratio, and also has a rear cover with 10 bolts.

So I tried to get a picture of what is written on the axle. Looks lik 355 but maybe it's something else?

Re: 95 z28

Don't guess. Pull the cover and count the number of teeth on the ring gear and on the pinion.

Good opportunity to change the gear lube as well.
