why does my engine "pop" after I let off the gas? (not exhaust backfire)

After I let off the gas, there is a distinct, loud, and metallic "click" that comes from under the hood, on the passenger side. I thought it might be pinging or detonation, but the rpms stay very smooth and the car does not skip or miss a beat. This usually happens around 2000-2500rpms about 1 full second after I let off the throttle.

When I let off the gas, it sounds one marble dropping into a tin can. It happens once, and it is intermittent, only happens once in a while. But if it does happen, it is always after I just let off the gas.

It's driving me nuts! what could it be?

Dont rev your new engine. Feel the valve covers. Hint: 1.6

thanks for the post. are you saying the 1.6s are not clearing, and hitting the valve covers?

Its weird, because it just happens once.. one big "pop" only after i let off the gas. Hmm. Was just worried that it might be something internal.

If it's ok, I guess its not a big deal - just would like to know for sure. It only happens when the engine is under load, so I can't really "feel" the valve cover...

Check the exhaust system for any leaks. Some popping on decel is natural. Its just raw fuel making its way through during overlap and igniting in the exhaust.
