Question Who Wants a MSD Replacement for the Opticrap?

As the subject implies, who would be interested in getting a MSD replacement for the Optispark?

I am currently trying to convince MSD to build a distributor for LT1's. Here are my thoughts:
1. it would have to retail for less than $450.
2. It would have to be servicible (cap/rotor)
3. It would have to be more durable
4. If possible, maybe make it adjustable for timing.

I think the timing thing is not really possible because the computer controls advance and retard, but if they can do it...

THEY ARE NOT PLANNING TO BUILD ONE. THEY DO NOT FEEL THERE IS ENOUGH DEMAND FOR IT. I BELIEVE THERE IS, SO IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN ONE, PLEASE POST OR EMAIL ME. I WILL FORWARD THIS INFORMATION TO THE PRODUCT MANAGER AT MSD.

Thanks for your help. We had influence on Hurst to build an A4 shifter (currently in developement), let's do this too!!!

The LS1 is most likely the 'platform of the future' when it comes to making power.. so.. because of that I doubt MSD would make an opti replacement unless there was a HUGE demand for it.

MSD will either make something like the electromotive SDI system or they'll make their own version of the opti.. just something that is far superior in build quality to the OEM optispark. They'd be better off improving on the original design w/ something better. Too much work for anything else.

I would like to see a replacement with better build quality. I also feel that the LS1 is the engine of the future, however, between Corvettes, Impalas, and Camaros, there are close to 1 million LT1 powered vehicles out there. Way more than LS1 powered cars, which already have a superior ignition system.

Thanks for your reply, anyone else have input?

One of the problems of producing a replacement distributor for the LT1 is the fact that no matter what you do, as long as you use the stock PCM to manage the engine, you need the low resolution pulse from the Opti. Without that signal, the PCM can not fire the injectors and shuts down the fuel system.

Go to the MSD website and look at their new "CPC" ignition system... possible to run 8 direct fire coils, with a standalone timing computer. Problem is, the CPC system needs a crank and cam position signal. It gets this by replacing a conventional distributor with a "plug"... essentially a replacement for the shaft of the original distributor with a cam postion sensor in it. What you need to convince MSD to do is to make a "plug" for the LT1 that can be inserted through a hole drilled in the back of the intake, and would have to provide a cam sensor signal that could be translated into the low res pulse for the Opti.... something I don't think would be that hard to do.

I'm in if they can get the price below the figure you're talking about. Last one I read about was MTI's, and they were planning on going into the $700-800 range. Well, that would pay for almost four opti's.

It would be nice if they made something that bolted on where the opti was supposed to go that had all the sensors needed for the CPC ignition.
