What is this raddling noise?

I need your help

Recently my car has been making this raddling metal on metal type of noise...kind of like a chattering.

At first it seemed pretty harmonious with the engine...when I revved up it would get louder and idling its pretty soft, but after driving today I could be wrong.

Today when I got to class, I popped hte hood to see where it was coming from, and at first I thought it was the alternator just being noisy and gay, but after listening more closely it sounded like it was coming dead center from the engine...more towards the front

As I got back to my car to shut it off I noticed the temperature up to about 250

It usually never gets above 180 as my trip to school is about 2 miles.

Up in my top list of fears next to sharks and getting my ***** cut off, is a spun bearing, so I'm praying to god thats not it.

The car drives strong from what I can tell.

Thanks for all your help!

Maybe the catalytic converter guts have broken loose, this is common. Sounds like a rocks in a metal bucket. Spun bearings knock, not rattle.

My metal on metal rattling was from my aftermarket converters heat shield rattling.

I've never quoted anyone in my sig, but if I had more room, this would be the first.

EDIT: Screw it, I made room.

I had that same sound and thought it was the alternator. It wasn't, it turned out to be dirty pullies. Yes, dirty pullies will make the the belt slip just a bit and cause that noise.. I checked the tech bulletins on AllData when it happened and found that a dirty or misaligned belt causes a 'chirping' like rattleing sound. I tried just replacing the belt at first but the noise soon returned. I took it off and cleaned all the pullies with brake drum cleaner. I put it back together and haven't had the 'chirps' since.
Take your belt off and see if the noise goes away. If it does try a new belt and cleaning the pullies. If the noise doesn't go away with the belt off then start looking elsewhere.

It could also just be a worn out belt tensioner.

Have you physically looked at the waterpump? Specifically the weephole to see if it is leaking? When a w/p starts making noise usually it'll start leaking as well. Have you changed the timing chain? It may be worht while to take the timing cover off to make sure the cam sproket and w/p gears are ok.

Belt tensioner is about a month old

and my jack broke and my hydraulic is back home so I cant get under the car at the moment to get a better look

The water pump looks alright from the outide...and I'm not sure what the weephole is?

Haven't touched the timing chain or cam sprokets

but still would any of that cause the temperature rise?

It kind of sounds like its coming from the the throttle body

Other problems with the car that may or may not be related:

the idle will be off sometimes...sometimes idling at 1100-1200 for long periods of time.

Also stompin on the gas at low rpms in any gear...say 2nd at 2000 rpms causes the car to stumble pretty bad throughout the rpm range, kind of surging I guess

And so far the coolant level is staying constant.
