Thermostat hypertech or other?

Hey, whats the difference between the Hypertech 160 degree thermostat and the Fail Safe 160 degree thermostat you can buy at Autozone?

I beleave the Autozone 160 stat is pretty much made for the older small block chevy engines but will work just not recomended for the LT1. Just stick with the Hypertech or SLP 160 stat and you'll be fine.

Thanks guys, the reason I asked was because I know a kid that works there, and he said they had one. I was suprised when he said they did.

Some do, if you ask for the Hypertech. Otherwise, their standard replacement thermostat is the same listing as the SBC thermostat, which is the wrong one.

Re: Thermostat hypertech or other?

I paid $16 for mine on ebay. It's a Hypertech and it only took 3 days from the time i bought it to arrive here. I bypassed my TB coolant and installed that thermostat on Thursday. With the A/C running in traffic temps never climb above 170. On the highway steady cruising its around 164 or so. Definately noticed gains with it though. It's much easier to burn out.

Re: Thermostat hypertech or other?

Yeah, the reg Autozone one is not the correct one, the Hypertech is designed for the reverse flowing cooling of the LT1 and is a different design than the SBC one.

Re: Thermostat hypertech or other?

I've had TWO Hypertech 160 Thermostats GO out on me. First one had 5 yrs of use and then it just maintained the Temp at 220 all the time.

I replaced it with another Hypertech after GM dealership flushed the coolant.... it lasted 4 months and failed to open one morning.... caused the hoses to BLOW and pegged the temp gauges.... lots of a mess including Flat-tow back to my home.

Needless to say, I'm shying away from that Hypertech crapp since it left me stranded twice. Now I just run some cheapo 185 from Nappa parts place (but of course it has to be the LT1 reverse-flow style).

Re: Thermostat hypertech or other?

Sounds like you had radiator stock leak in there. Never put that crap in, it will destroy your entire cooling system. I had flush all mine out. My Hypertech keeps my coolant around 165 so i think it works pretty good. No variation at all. I did of course flush every part of the cooling system, and made very sure i bled the air out.
