1997 lt1 ewp timing chain options
I have a 1997 z28, doing an electric water pump so I dont need the water pump drive.
can I use any small block chevy timing set?
what would I have to do to run a double roller set?
thanks

I think Dwayne is indicating that for your goals and ease of use/installation, you should probably just get a stock replacement timing set.
I have the Cloyes true roller double chain. I had to modify(more exactly, grind the hell out of it) the timing cover and ditch the misfire reluctor and use a shorter yoke. That was all for a solid roller cam over .600 lift. With my current setup(low lift turbo cam), I could use a stock timing set and be fine.

The nose of the cam is quite different when comparing an LT1 and a traditional SBC. I don't think you could just request a SBC timing set and it work with an LT1 cam nose.
Well, I did a quick search and perhaps I am wrong. Read this...

Re: 1997 lt1 ewp timing chain options
Cloyes 3145 is a dual row chain and requires some clearancing of the timing cover. I run one and the clearancing was minimal. 3157 is a single row chan and might not need clearancing...
I went this route when I changed over to the 95+ opti and was deleting the cam driven waterpump. It works just fine....

Far as "worn" I would worry more about your new electric waterpump than I would the 175K mile timing chain

Re: 1997 lt1 ewp timing chain options
I went with the Cloyes 3157 & needed no clearancing. Cloyes claims that the double roller has no strength advantage over the single roller. I also knocked out the water pump drive from the engine block & welded up the hole in the timing cover before installation of the single roller timing chain set...

Since that thread I helped a friend put together a daily driver with a .590 lift cam and stock waterpump, just put a Cloyes S505 lower gear on to tighten the chain, been fine for a couple years now.

Re: 1997 lt1 ewp timing chain options
Anyone wonder why the single roller timing set costs $15 dollars more than the double roller timing set? I sometimes wonder because the single roller chain is like a motorcycle chain with motorcycle sprokets/teeth & the double roller chain is like two bicycle chains with bicycle sprokets/teeth. The double roller is probably stronger but I sometimes wonder if it really is...someone should do somekind of load test & put all the debate to rest...
