Re: Technique to install water pump seal (tip)

What this thread became was a confrontation between a newby who seemed to have come here for the singular purpose of starting arguments with anyone who had the members' respect, and proving his intellectual superiority. Every thread he got involved in turned out the same - his ego against the world.

He didn't last long = banned. Take that into consideration before deciding whom to believe.

Oh I see that, when it comes to reference level information I leaned quite some time ago that you and shoebox are the people to listen to. That's not to say that there aren't many extremely valuable contributors here, but you two seem to be the "go to" guys.

So the question of the seal, both lips outward then? It seems as if there would be no other way of installing it?

Also, if you have a moment, might you take a look at the post I made yesterday updating my non-start condition?

Thanks

Yes, both parts of the seal face outward from the middle (IOW, the front faces to the water pump and the back to engine.

So opposing directions then like / \ and not // with the tilt frontwards towards the water pump?

Okay, think I got it, semantics can often make simple questions more confusing(my fault), when I said "outward" above I meant both lips of the seal face towards the water pump, not one lip each in opposing directions.

Re: Technique to install water pump seal (tip)

And I have never actually replaced the water pump seal, so I would never offer a speculative response.

Re: Technique to install water pump seal (tip)

the inner seal faces towards engine, the outer away from it. The seal instals dry, no grease.

without some form of "tool" to put it on, the "inner" (back) seal lip folds over which will cause a immediate leak.

some use the WP drive coupler as the "tool" or socket or Sharpie pen cap. There is a specific tool available for around $20 IIRC on ebay

Yes, thanks, and I did get the tool from ebay, $25 but it was here in 2 days.

Re: Technique to install water pump seal (tip)

Traditional rotating shaft seal, rubber/silicone/viton...

It will be soft and pliable, many come with a spring holding tension on the backside.

Newer style PTFE shaft seal:

Rigid lip, no spring, usually requires an installation sleeve. LS1 front and rear main seals are both this type as is the LT1 water pump seal.

The first type requires lubrication, I use a wipe of wheel bearing grease.

The second type should be installed dry.

More info... PTFE seals
