Starter problems
I put in a stall convertor and now my new starter likes about 1/2'' hitting the flex plate. It is the LT4 starter it worked fine before I put the edge stall in that was the only thing that changed. Any ideals???

Re: Starter problems
I just don't see why a new convertor would make that bid of a distance.

Re: Starter problems
But the same flex-plate,correct?
And by "my new starter likes about 1/2'' hitting the flex plate." you mean the starter gear, when fully extended, is even with the ring gear, but about 1/2" side-to-side away from engaging the ring gear on the flex-plate? Or do you mean the starter gear would have to extend another 1/2" front-to-back to engage the ring gear?

Re: Starter problems
Yea it is the same flex plate and the gear would have to go another 1/2'' front to back to engage the ring gear.
I think I am going to go back to the original style starter and see what that dose.

Re: Starter problems
possible your starter took a crap but doubtful...since you have another starter try it.
FWIW I have the "vette" aka LT4 starter and it was a direct bolt in

Re: Starter problems
Are you possibly looking at the nose of the starter, and seeing that the starter gear is 1/2" away from the ring gear, forgetting it is going to move out of the starter nose when the starter is powered, and mesh with the ring gear?
Or did you power the starter, while watching the starter gear, and it did not move out toward the ring gear, leaving the starter spinning and doing nothing?

Re: Starter problems
Yea I put power to the starter and it shot out the starter gear and liked about 1/2'' from engaging the flex plate. I haven't had time to mess it with it this week.
I am thinking that the starter gear isn't moving out far enough.

Re: Starter problems
That is a straight bolt pattern, universal 153/168 tooth starter (two sets of bolt holes) for Gen 1 and Gen 2. It can be rotated for header clearance. Mine is about 12 years old.

Re: Starter problems
Well it's been awhile since I have been able to work on the car,but I did order a factory style lt1 starter.
I put it on and it works grate I don't know why the lt4 style would not work with just a convertor change. (my luck I guess)
