Removing light cover on rearview mirror

Anyone know how to remove the transparent covers for the 2 lights on the rearview mirror? They seem to be held very tightly in place and I don't want to accidentally crack them upon removal.

Also, I'm having a problem with the lamp on the driver's side (it's the one on the rearview mirror). Sometimes it does not come on when I open the doors (either one; also doesn't work when trunk opens). After a few days of regular use, suddenly the light works again. Anyone had this problem?
