Optispark Front Cover Oil Seal Question

I did a cam swap a couple of months ago and replaced all of the seals on the front cover. The oil seal for opti started leaking almost immediately, about a drop of oil a day. I pulled it out today and really can't see anything wrong with it or the sealing surface on the opti. I'm getting ready to replace the seal again - are there any special precautions that I might have missed?

Re: Optispark Front Cover Oil Seal Question

Gotta be clean and the seal driven in flat. If you bend it at all, it will likely leak.

Re: Optispark Front Cover Oil Seal Question

Thanks - pretty sure I did that. Do you put any type of grease on the seal to ease break-in?

Re: Optispark Front Cover Oil Seal Question

and the Opti and WP dive seal are PTFE...they install dry. Do not lube them

typically the leak is from the WP drive gear as on install it is easy (especially when not using a install tool) to fold over the inner lip which is a instant leak. Oil migrates down and it can appear the Opti or crank seal is leaking when in fact the WP drive seal is the problem. Look carefully when you remove Opti

Re: Optispark Front Cover Oil Seal Question

Yeah, the WP drive seal had a folded over lip. What's a good item to use for an install tool?

Re: Optispark Front Cover Oil Seal Question

Problem solved. Did some searching and wound up doing the Sharpie trick. Thanks,
Jim
