Motor mounts

'95 Z28

Asking for your experience and suggestions regarding replacing the motor mounts on these cars.

Are they known to collapse, compress, etc?

I have 125,000 miles on the car and mine look good. I don't want to go to performance mounts but rather stay with factory.

Re: Motor mounts

The mounts longevity depends a lot on how the car is driven, maintained, or abused. If yours look good, I'd say there's no need to replace them. Just inspect them during maintenance cycles.

If your car has been cared for, they should still have a lot of life left in them with 125k. Mine are still originals at 225k and still in good shape.

Re: Motor mounts

Most guys say to stay away from poly or stiffer mounts, except for racing only. Otherwise the ride will be too harsh.

Re: Motor mounts

Yeah, that's what I was thinking Strick. I'm looking for a spirited, comfortable ride not racing or being beat to death. Thanks for the post.

Re: Motor mounts

I wouldn't think poly motor mounts would cause a "harsh ride".... just a bit more vibration transmitted from the engine.

Re: Motor mounts

I almost feel like they are a must with headers. The y-pipe always was so close to the floor and would hit the floor (I know mine were worn) but even before they were bad it was iffy. Now the y-pipe is in the place and doesnt move.

Re: Motor mounts

Simply looking at them may not be enough. Make sure they haven't separated from the metal brackets using a small pry bar or large screwdriver. My LS1 trans mount looked perfectly normal until I tried to lift the transmission and saw it separate. The motor mounts looked ok but had sagged just enough for the metal hidden by the rubber to have bottomed out on the mounting plate.

Re: Motor mounts

Just something to think about....When these Camaros were built back in Van Ness,Ca, the quality control was not the best. Some of the frames and unibodies were not exactly the same, measurement wise, once completed. That is why some guys have no problems with some fitment issues and some others do have problems. Now put 20 plus years on these cars and the designed measurements are likely to be even further out of spec. Like I say, just something to think about.

My mistake, I was thinking 3rd gen, but the basic idea still applies.

Re: Motor mounts

Motor mounts aren't discontinued yet. GM still makes/sells them.
