Re: more power

Is that HP goal at the flywheel, or at the rear wheels?

Re: more power

The difference is that the numbers at the flywheel translate into lower numbers at the wheels due to mechanical losses in the drive line. Depending on the transmission type, you can lose between 15% and 20% to the driveline....

Is your desire for more power related to racing or just more grunt while driving on the street?

Re: more power

Looks like its time for Le2 heads & cam
installation in my area for heads/cam 1800-2500 dollars... parts another 3000
now the question is how strong is the bottom end and how much more is this going to cost

You might consider 4.10 gears in the rear. You'll get a lot more grunt off the line and through the entire rev range. It's a solid modification for M6 cars and great if you then want to go with a heads/cam package later...

Re: more power

The importance of flywheel HP vs. rear wheel HP comes down to budget.... 400 at the flywheel is easy, not very expensive. 400 at the rear wheels means you have to make about 460 HP at the flywheel. That's based on a 13% drivetrain loss for the T56, which we actually measured when we built my engine. 460 HP at the flywheel gets a bit more expensive.

450 HP at the rear wheels would require about 520 HP at the flywheel. Now you are at the upper limit of porting the stock heads, and will have a cam that isn't necessarily street friendly. You would also be pushing the stock internals a bit.

Comes down to $$$$. How fast do you want to go? .... how much do you have available to spend? Keep in mind, that you have to get that HP to the rear wheels, then to the ground. You will be looking at the additional expense of an upgraded clutch, maybe a better driveshaft, and with stock, fragile 10-bolt rear, hard launches with an M6 on a sticky track can result in disaster.

To have any chance at traction at those power levels, you need to upgrade the rear suspension, and get some sticky tires. Figure that for every $ you put into the engine, you're going to need another 50% for the added drivetrain and suspension upgrades.

Ain't cheap.... but it's fun
