On the stock tune it ran so rich that when I rolled into the throttle it would backfire before finally taking off

How streetable is it with an A-4 stock stall converter?
How much of an impact on gas mailage. Now that 93 octane is approaching $2.25 per gallon that is a concern.

aaron_depue- You can look at the very top of the page and click on the small link that says "Supporting Advertiser Index". Find the link for Madwolf Tuning or something along those lines. That or you can go to www.pcmforless.com, but I'm a little less than happy with their service after the sale.
Stock stall converter will be ok, to take full advantage of it you will need to get a higher stall later. 2800 RPM has worked fine for me, good mix of street manners and performance.
I got 21.7 mpg on a 75% highway/25% stop and go driving trip. That was with ported heads, HOTcam, bolt ons, 2800 lock up stall.

Re: LT4 Hotcam require tuning?
A dyno tune, in the hands of a competent tuner, will always make more power than any mail order tune - it's a simple fact. You get real-time data, you adjust for it, and this equates to a better tune for the particular car (every one of them is different). I don't care if you've tuned 100 hotcam cars, the real-time tune will beat it every time. Now, I will say that if you've done enough of them, you can get it close enough to be worthwhile - you just need to weigh what the extra power is worth to you. For a simple bolt on car, with a mild cam and without any other issues, a mail-order tune will probably suffice 80% of the time.
