need EGR

recently got 400 code and will be replacing my EGR on my 97' 79k car. Anyone got a good place to pick one up? local dealer wants $90, orielly $70, and autozone wants $60.

What size are the bolts that hold it on, 1/2"?

You could always try the classifieds, someone right now is selling one for 25 bucks.

No bolts.... studs with a nut that can be removed with a 1/2" wrench.

Did you look at the discount GM parts dealers listed on Shoebox's pages? He also has the part numbers and "typical" costs listed.

here is a good question, why does the SES light come on to signal the EGR problem, stay on for a couple of days, then go off. It usually reappears withing a couple of days.

The light only stays on when the code is "active". The PCM has a difficult time finding exactly when to test for the EGR flow, because it has to do it when the MAP reading is extremely stable (all readings stable for 1.5-seconds), and the small blip in MAP when it cycles the EGR valve will be visible. Its also possible that the failure is borderline... sometimes there might be enough backpressure in the system to give the required flow, other times there might not be enough pressure.

The light will only come on when it fails the diagnostic test, and it only tests the system once per trip (4 times per trip if the PCM has been "reset"). I suspect the light stays on until it passes the next test.

What kind of exhaust system do you have on the car?

Hey if it's the same as a 93' car, you can have mine, I took it off recently when I installed the LT's. Just pay shipping

I have the stock manifolds and SLP TOTL exhaust.

I do remember somewhere on here people saying that the 96-97' EGR's were different(and somewhat faulty), but a huge thanx anyways.

Im gonna go drive it today, it'll probably SES again
