lt1 swap, bad optispark?

I did an lt1 swap into my car and its been problem riddled but I'm slowly figuring stuff out. My problem is is that when I start the car cold, it starts up almost right away and runs decent, but after the car has run for a little while, after I shut it off and restart it, it gets harder and harder to start an the idle gets kinda bad and it will misfire a little. Also it bogs at idle when you try and give it gas. I pulled the plugs and they all indicate its running a little rich. Could this be a sign of a bad optispark? I replaced the icm already so that's theoretically good. One more thing is managed to over fill my oil by about a quart. So when running, the car bellows smoke, and there is oil coming through the exhaust. I drained some and it's a little better but still smoking more than normal, so would it still just be burning out the oil in the exhaust or do you guys think I have bad rings?

Re: lt1 swap, bad optispark?

First off make sure the oil level is correct. Overfilling and running the engine cant be a good thing. Once the oil level is correct the car should stop smoking, unless there is other problems.

Also Advanced Auto Parts and AutoZone will scan your car for free. Not sure what year car you have but code readers are pretty cheap these days. 1996 and up would be OBD2. 1995 and below are OBD1. Get a scanner/ code reader they are well worth it. Prices are 30-40 bucks.

Re: lt1 swap, bad optispark?

What is the year of the LT1 engine (since it appears to have been transplanted into something else)? What year PCM are you using? Are there any major engine modifications?

There is free scan/data logging software for the 94/95 LT1, so that's why we need basic info like the year of the PCM.

Without any data, it's pure guesswork. Your problem could be as simple as a faulty coolant temp sensor, or it may be more complex. The ignition control module (ICM) and the optical cam position sensor in the distributor could be exhibiting heat soak issues. So could the fuel pump. A lot of these problems sill set direct codes, others will cause engine operating conditions that point to the problem.

A code scan and a data log can help solve the problems. Blind guesses may or may not, and will cost a lot more in the long run.

Re: lt1 swap, bad optispark?

Its a 96 lt1 out of an impala. Pcm is from the impala, mods are just some shorty headers, and full exhaust, air intake and that's about it. nothing special or major. I did drain some oil but I only ran the car for about a total of 15 minutes and the smoke got a little better. I will look more into a scanner and see if I can get one. Just was looking for some opinions from people who have more experience then I to start me off

Re: lt1 swap, bad optispark?

You can get an OBD-2 code scanner for as little as $20. I'm sure there are data logging apps as well. Did you wire up the SES light and the data link connector?
