High pitched shriek for a moment between shifts.

My 1995 automatic Z28 often times makes a loud shriek between shifts under heavy throttle, and even when I am in second and then quickly let off of throttle. I believe it is my serpentine belt slipping for a moment. It did this on my old belt, and the one I replaced it with. It is not my tires breaking loose, I know that sound! It did it with the old and now new alternator too. Can the tensioner assembly actually be quiet all the time except for sudden rpm changes?

Re: High pitched shriek for a moment between shifts.

It might be either the fixed pulley bearings, or the spring loaded take up pulley bearings. When you replaced the belt, did you check these pulleys for side play or roughness when rotated ? If not, pretty easy to just remove the belt, and try that. Pulleys should be smooth rotating without side play, and check the spring loaded take up pulley to see if it has enough spring tension.

That noise is usually the belt slipping. If there are no issues with contamination from the water pump leaking or other sources and the tensioner is good, a Goodyear Gatorback belt will usually fix it.
