Fuel problem??

Fuel problem??

I have a 96 z28 camaro lt1. Less than 100k on the engine, replaced optispark, fuel pump, fuel filter, water pump, new ignition coil, etc.

The issue im having now is that i had fixed a coolant issue with the car that i had been having. Everything was working fine, no issues. Drove it to work one night, went out to start it, and just like that it would sit there and crank, and crank, and crank. I tried to give it some gas while cranking it, nothing. Thing is, im not smelling gas what so ever, none. I hear the fuel pump run when key is turned on, i checked the fuel filter, all is being sent throught it. I get fuel all the way to the engine. Spray starting fluid into the engine, tries to start off of it, but runs out and goes back to cranking. The vats is bypassed on this vehicle, so that can be ruled out. The spark plugs are dry, but getting no spark, the only thing i found was one vacuum hose was off on the optispark. I put it back on and nothing, switched MAFs, nothing. The injectors have power, but when cranking, they do not pulsate on the test light. I dont know what else to do.

You need to check to see if the opti signals are working properly. No opti signals = no injectors firing. Look at the opti troubleshooting video in the opti sticky at the top of this forum. It will show you how to examine those signals with a good multimeter.

You mentioned that it is getting fuel...but do you know at what pressure? Have you checked the pressure with a fuel pressure gauge(key on run)? However your main focus should be the opti signals.

This may help too....troubleshooting charts.....crank but no run from my 1996 Camaro factory manuals....

couldnt find video for that, checked the sticky and read through it, gonna test the different connections out, but i did check the shreader valve?(spelling). It did spray when pushed in.

Scan it for codes (OBD-2 code readers can cost as little as $20). If the PCM sets P1371 for loss of low resolution cam position pulse signal from the Opti, it shuts down the fuel system after the initial prime. SES light does not come on.

There is a similar situation with codes for the ICM.

What brand Opti did you install?

dont remember what brand, and it didnt throw codes when this first happened

OP

you can't remember what brand Opti you bought.....do you remember how much you paid then?

Does "AC Delco oe Delphi" ring a bell?

for a 96 there are 2 things you need in your tool box (or pay someone/shop to test)

fuel pressure gauge=$35
code reader=$30 or less

MSD, and i have a scan tool, fuel pressure gauge. But gettin no spark either

The schrader valve spraying does not prove anything other than fuel is there at some unknown pressure. You need a fuel gauge to show you if the pressure is correct.

You are going to have a rough time troubleshooting that car without the proper tools.

You also need to read more carefully....I found the video within 10 seconds of opening the opti thread. That may sound a little mean, but good troubleshooting is about paying close attention to the details. If you miss something, you will miss solving the the problem. I have posted the video below.....watch it....and pay close attention....

I might add: my 95 lt1 would not start. Checked fuel pressure, It had tooo much , above 40lbs, changed Fuel regulator, started right up at 30lbs with new regulator. Needs to be correct for your LT1.

42 is not to high....but 30 is to low for FP. The motor will "start/run" on either but 30 psi is going to make it run to lean

FP wants to be 41-47 engine off, key on and should hold there after pump stops running. with engine running it should drop 3-10 psi. with engine running when you pull vac line of FPR, it will go back up the 3-10 psi it drops with vac.

The correct pressure depends on whether you are measuring it at idle, with or without the vacuum compensation line connected, or measuring it under light or heavy load.

Idle with the vacuum line off you want 43.5 psi, with GM spec accepting 41-47 psi. Reconnect the vacuum line and fuel pressure will drop proportional to intake manifold vacuum... an 8 psi drop would be unusual with a stock cam, less drop with an aggressive cam. Under max load, WOT over 5,000 RPM pressure should not drop below 40 psi.

Sorry i have not posted back here in a little while. Ive gone through these test off of the video. Everything checked good, except pcm to distributor. Im getting no voltage from terminal a from pcm to distributor, bad pcm?
