Are you sure you had the connector on the Schrader valve on far enough to depress the core valve? That would prevent you from getting a pressure reading.
The part that is most likely to fail in the fuel pressure regulator is the diaphragm that is exposed to the manifold vacuum connection. If that fails, you will get liquid fuel into the vacuum line. Did you pull the vacuum line off and check it?
