EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Valve

Ok, this is my latest endeavour.

From reading the service manual, it looks like my rich condition could be stemming from the solenoid not receiving power or being stuck open, constantly purging the manifold, in essence drawing extra fuel into the picture. Sounds reasonable, especially since I've checked EVERYTHING else.

Unfortunately, the service manual doesn't specify a testing technique. Does anyone know of one?

I suggest capping off the line from the canister and capping off the solenoid. That way you know the canister is not connected.

All it does is draw in fumes from the tank. I don't think it is going to cause a rich condition (or not much of one). If there was a problem with the EVAP solenoid, you would probably get a code.

Well, it's on a 93, so there's no code that I can find for it. That's going down the list of codes in the service manual too.

It seems that it could be my problem, since when the car is initially started, it's fine, and as it warms up, the fuel load up begins, just like stated in the service manual text.

If it's not, I'm going to be wedged in between two very big immobile rocks.

Isolate it like OBE1 95Z28 said and you will know whether drawing in fumes has any effect.

Re: EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Valve

I am getting this code...does that mean the solenoid needs replaced? The wiring all around it looks fine. Mods in sig, I thought I heard somewhere that if you dont have your AIR/EGR then it might disrupt the EVAP.

I can't see how the EGR or AIR would affect the EVAP. Problem could be wiring, connection, solenoid... The dark green/white wire should have battery voltage on it with the key ON. The brown wire will show a ground when the PCM commands the solenoid on. I am not sure what the resistance should be, but you can look across the solenoid terminals (unplugged from harness) and see what the resistance of the solenoid is.

Re: EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Valve

Thank you I ordered a solenoid, since I checked the wiring and connections. It wouldnt be the canister would it? Thanks again shoebox.

The code is for a perceived electrical issue. The canister can't really cause that.

Re: EVAP Canister Purge Solenoid Valve

I am also getting a code 26, I swapped out the old solenoid with a new one and I am still getting the same code. Any ideas?

On a 1993, 26 can mean multiple things. Without a manual, I can't really tell you what they all are. Just for grins, check your AIR pump fuse.
