Engine Breakdown process need one part removed..

I am in the process of getting everything removed so I can send it to the machine shop but I need to remove the oil filter, housing?? The best descripton I can give is that it is round, has a round rod sticking out that you thread your oil filter into. In my chiltons and my LT1 rebuild book it shows that it's an oil cooler, However I thought the oil cooler was the 2 coolant lines that went to that sandwich like thing between the oil filter and the oil filter housing in the block.

So basically if you could help me out on how to remove this from the block I would appreciate it!

Thanks again fellas.

Re: Engine Breakdown process need one part removed..

The oil filter adapter is held on by two bolts. Remove the two bolts and then the adapter.

There is also a check ball lodged inside an oil passage that should be removed before tanking the block and put back in during reassembly. The best description I have seen about it is in this book: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/produ...uct_id=1955114 .

Re: Engine Breakdown process need one part removed..

Thanks shoebox. Thats actually the exact same book I am using to rebuild my block.

I removed the two bolts that go horizontal. One is maybe 1/4 long and the other is 1" or so. Does the adapter just pull out or is it an unscrew type? I havent removed the oil cooler either from the diagram on your site. I dont want to mess up the threads that go into the oil filter, but I assume that tube needs to be removed to remove the oil cooler?

So you do have an oil cooler ? I have never messed with one, so I don't know for sure how it comes apart, but it looks like #153 may need to be unscrewed to allow the cooler adapter to come off. Then #142 can be unbolted from the block.

Yup, thats what I thought. I just didnt want to mess up the threads. I am going to perminantly remove the cooler anyhow. I guess I will just give it a go and see what I can break.
