Electric water pump keeps blowing fuse??

Electric water pump keeps blowing fuse??
I have an CSI electric water pump, not sure on the age. I put the car away last fall, ran fine. Took it out last weekend, noticed the car was getting hot. Then noticed my EWP wasn't working? Checked the fuse, it was blown. It's an inline blade fuse 25A on the positive side. I looked over the wiring, all looks good. I can hear the ignition wire working fine with the relay. It's got power, just keeps blowing the fuse? Maybe it's the relay? Or probably fried EWP?

Re: Electric water pump keeps blowing fuse??
Might be shorted motor. But it also might be froze up after sitting a while. Take it off and see if you can spin the impeller. Then see if it runs outside the system without blowing the fuse. What type of fuse is being used? I think it should be a slow-blowing type.
Where is the fuse installed, on the controlled side of the relay (from ignition switch) or on the load side (with motor)? Is there another circuit breaker for the motor itself?

The pump motor is bad. You can send it to CSR for repair. They usually send you back the latest version. Do not run the pump removed (dry), it will burn up the seal.

It's a 25 amp blade, fuse is on the power side (red wire) going to the relay. So basically right from the battery to the relay. I don't see another circuit breaker.

You can always put an ammeter on it and check the current draw. If the seal is dragging or something is rusted or shorting the motor, it could draw more than it is supposed to and blow the fuse, which it sounds like it is doing...

Running the motor for a few seconds outside the system won't hurt anything. The seals get far worse treatment during normal warm up periods.

When you say the current draw? You mean the wire comin from the water pump to the relay?

Greg88:
FWIW, I used the CSI 37 gpm pump for a few years with a 15 amp fuse and never had a problem. The 37 is my spare now and I'm currently using a Mezierre 55 gpm with a 20 amp fuse (Mez ships it with a 20 amp).

Well I had a 25 amp in it? Which seems high now. Anyone know what a rebuilt one costs from CSR?
