can i do anything to the starter from the top
the solenoid on my starter is going out and i havent had a chance to get to it yet. for now i have my clutch safety switch hanging under the dash so i can reach it and squeeze it by hand. that lets me click the starter on and off quickly until it finally comes on. last night it took more than ten minutes of clicking it before it turned on. is there anything i can do to make it work better before i can get to it? im in a dorm right now, so i really dont have any way of getting under my car.

are you asking how to un-install it? or are you asking how to "jump" it?
if you want to jump it, you can probably do it from above, you just touch the two terminals together with a screwdriver, make sure it has a plastic handle so you don't shock the crap out of yourself.
also, you have a six speed, so, when you park. try to park on a hill, and when you are ready to start the car, put it in 2nd gear, hold the clutch in, let it start rolling about 10-15 mph, and slip the clutch. make sure the key is in the on position.

i dont have even the stock jack with me, and there are really no hills around for me to kick start it.
what terminals would i be jumping? something on the outside of the starter solenoid?

you could also push it, if you can get it rolling fast enough. a couple friends could get it going fast enough.
there's a small terminal, and a big one, just touch them together with a screwdriver.
they're on the starter solenoid. i have a feeling they're going to be hard to get to, everything on a 4th gen is hard to reach.
