Cam Question

Hello,

I am in the process of putting together a 383 LT1 for my 1994 Z28. Working with Karl Ellwein on the shortblock which will consist of Dragonslayer Crank, Compstar Rods and Mahle Forged pistons.

I previously purchased a AI Head and Cam package which has served me well thus far. I will be re-using the AI 200cc heads but thinking about going with one of their cams which will be better suited for the 383.

Has anybody run this cam and can you give me any info about it as far as how it drives, idles, etc?

The cam is spec'd as follows: Ai 228 / 234 - .614" / .614" - 108 LSA

My car is not a race car, mostly driven on weekends to car shows and such. Emissions is not a concern.

Just looking to put together a good performing street car with about 400rwhp. Phil @ AI recommended this cam but was curious if anyone has experience with it.

My car is a 6 speed and will have all supporting mods....ie Kooks long tubes, true dual exhaust....etc.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Cam Question

I'm researching heads/cam for my 383 and contacted AI as well. Phil also recommended that cam for me. I told him this was my daily driver that will probably see the track a few times each summer. I asked about that cam on LS1tech and got some responses from people with first hand experience. Here's the thread: Looking at AI 21* TFS heads, need guidance with the cam - LS1TECH

Re: Cam Question

I have nothing much more to offer beyond what I posted on that LS1Tech thread (I'm bowtienut over there).
You're in good hands with both Karl and Phil.
What CR is Karl shooting for?
The last 396 LT1 I helped a guy with is running 11.0:1 CR in a cruiser/driver setup and is running a 234/242/110 cam from AI. runs extremely well, good highway mileage. Personally, I'd lean that way for a 383. Ask Phil also about valvespring longevity too; that was a consideration in the 396 setup.

Re: Cam Question

Thanks for your help. Is this cam "hard" on the valvetrain? Im assuming because of the high lift numbers?

As for CR, Im thinking 11:1. Looking for reliability out of this motor....within reason of course.

Re: Cam Question

Phil indicated to me that the springs would be good to the tune of ~30k miles with driving and occasional racing with that 234/242/110 .600'ish lift cam, as opposed to ~10k miles with my 228/234/108 .614" cam.
If you want to be even easier on the valvetrain, go with 1.5 rockers instead of the 1.6's.

I now have 5 seasons of 1/4 mile passes and a few open track (roadrace) days on mine, still AI's original springs. No falloff in performance as measured by trap speeds. I have less than 1000 road miles on it.
