Aftermarket cooling?

Anybody got any tips for a aftermarket fan setup? How would a aftermarket temp relay effect the pcm without tuning it out? Also anybody got a suggested dual core radiator in mind? Most don't have the reverse cooling line fitting. Drill and make threads and attache a fitting? All help appreciated.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

Whats wrong with the factory set up and why would you want to change it?
Mine works great, never had a issue.

The stock system is a very good one.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

Stock fan motors tend to go out due to multiple issues and some have built in relays. After market fans are simple and bad from the get go or they wear out. Then the whole high and low speed of the fans is the downfall to me. As for the stock radiators for newer model vehicles all the end caps are made of plastic and can crack with stress or pressure over time. My goal is to buy a better cooling system and run one speed (high). Plus I plan on running at the strip on the weekends and adding more upgrades over a period of time. I know the stock fans and shroud are ideal but the whole high low thing running thru the pcm is what I don't like. I want it to be simple. It hits 200 and they turn on. Plus it has a A/c delete so that is no concern.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

Never heard of anyone complain about the stock fans wearing out. The stock fan relay operation and configuration is great and couldn't be simpler, IMHO. The plastic tanks do eventually wear out, but it took mine over 18 years to do so. Fan on temps can be easily reprogrammed and the cooling system is easily capable of handling lots of power upgrades. I think all your worries are unfounded.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

In the many years I've been on this site, and similar LT1 oriented sites, I don't think I've seen an unusual number of cooling fan failures. It would appear the Rob/Shoebox feels the same way. My stock fans are still going strong, cooling an 800HP nitrous motor. Buddy of mine use the stock fans on an 1,125HP blown LT1. I think the only people that find a problem with the stock fans are the people building turbo's, where they run into space limitations, and massive underhood heat loads from the turbo plumbing.

What are the "multiple issues"?

What fans have "built in relays"? Why would the LT1 fans need internal relays? Why would you not want to operate the fans using relays?

Why is "the whole high and low speed of the fans (is) the downfall to (you)."? If you don't like the low/high application, get the 1 fan/2 fan application from a 93 or early 94 (my 94 is "late" and has the 3-relay low/high control).

The radiators are showing their age.... these things are close to (or more than) 20 years old. Yes, a $600 Griffin aluminum radiator will provide much higher reliabilty and cooling capacity (and is available with all the correct reverse cooling connections - I have one), but it's overkill for a "mostly" stock engine.

The PCM can be programmed to turn on both fans at high speed at 200* if that's what you want.

Other than the cracked plastic radiator end caps, I'm not sure I understand why you feel the stock system is such a disaster.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

Thanks for all the info. That's what I was looking for if I could reprogram the high low and cut on times that would be great. Probably replace the factory fan motors with OEM and a full aluminum dual core radiator. Having a good cooling setup is like insurance to my engine and just as important as changing the fluids on time. Thanks for all the help. Also for the built in relays, I had a gm car that the fans cut on when the ac was on but with the ac off it would not cut on when rising in temp. So I changed the motors and that fixed that problem. Like a built in relay? Not sure if that is the same for the camaros.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

There are no relays in the fan system other than what are in the fuse/relay panel.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

I have a 21 yr old OEM cooling system. A couple years ago put a 160 stat and headers, then had her tuned by PCMforless. A must if you want optimum benefits from the 160 stat. The engine runs very cool even at 100 outside temps. About 170 degrees all the time. When I had her dynoed the operator even remarked at how cool she stayed after 3 pulls.

You might want to try a 160 Hypertech thermostat, tune to have the fans come on earlier., I think you will be impressed how cool the car will run. I would try this route before going aftermarket.

Re: Aftermarket cooling?

stock is good a be cool or griffen will prolly have more fins and tubes. And imo spal makes the best fans... putting spal fans on the tbss and ditching the clutch fan
