94 z28 backfiring

Hey guys. I have a 94 z28 and I've noticed that everytime I wash it, it will run poorly for the rest of the day. It will start misfiring and bogging. I know that you are not supposed to get the opti spark wet at all and I've been very careful to keep water away from the engine as much as possible. Does any one have any suggestions on what could be wrong or what I need to do? Thanks

I am assuming by wash it you must mean you drive through a car wash??? and said car wash sprays water from the underside... Have you ever had any problems driving in the rain or wet weather?

No I manually wash it and try not to get any water in the engine compartment. But it did start bogging last night while driving it in the rain from the under spray on the road.

I guess that probably narrows down what it could be quite a bit because the water probably cant get in too many areas. I guess if it were me I would see were the water "gets". I would assume it must be causing a short or something on a wire or connector. Thats my guess. Do you have a scan tool to moniter data? If you did you might see a sensor acting goofy or something on there may alert you were to look. Anothet though is if your wires are bad and the extra moisture under hood is causing arcing. Might want to lift hood in the dark you could even use a spray bottle to mist certain areas and try to cause it to act up.

Re: 94 z28 backfiring

Check the thick gasket that seals the back edge of the hood to the cowl. If that leaks, it can drip directly on the PCM, or on top of the engine. After 19 years might be deteriorated.

Ok thanks for the suggestions. Ill look around and probably replace the opti spark, wires, and plugs to see what that does.
