1994 camaro z28 timing problem

ok i got a 94 z28 camaro and i just put the cc306 cam in it. i go to start it and it wont start. my dad thinks the timing in 180 out. i put the cam gear (top gear) at 6 oclock and the crank gear (bottom gear) at 12oclock. Is that the correct way???

The dots on the gears should be both on top, or as you put it both 12oclock.

Check Shoebox's cam install page:

http://shbox.com/ci/cam_install.html

Install cam sprocket and timing chain. (1/2" bolts - torque to 18 lb. ft. I used some red threadlocker on them) Line up the dots on the timing gears. 12 o'clock for the crank gear and 6 o'clock for the cam gear. This will put the cam dowel at 3 o'clock and #6 TDC.
Are you sure you indexed the splined drive shaft for the Opti correctly, both in the cam sprocket, and in the back of the Opti?

ok because the guy who told me the marks should be a 6 o clock (top gear) and 12 oclock(bottom gear). and he had a page he printed out and it did say thats how it is supposed to be. and today they said it was 180 out. and i noticed on the distributor the gear only went in one way.and he is thinking the problem is in the distributor. He told me he put a timing chain on a firebird or trans am with the lt1 and he had the timing chain marked just like i do and it started. It will crank over with no problem but wont start.

That is very incorrect.

Crank at 12, cam at 6.

If you did it that way it's fine, don't waste time pulling the cover.

It is possible the opti is not on correct.

I would check fuel and spark before that, only because it's a quick easy check. If those check out fine, and the opti is good, then pull the pump, crank hub, and opti to check the timing there. If that checks good, you might then consider pulling the cover to be sure that the timing is on.

Even if you were off a tooth, the car would at least start. I've never experienced it on this car, but on others, I've had my timing 180 off and the car would at least start but run very poor.

ok i thought i had it right. one time when it started for a few seconds and it seemed like it was running rough and thats why im asking around. but other than that one time it started for a few seconds it hasnt started up at all. and i was trying to find out if it could be an easier way to fix the problem because i really dont want to take the timing chain cover and all that off if nothing is wrong with it.

raroz28 is wrong. The cam dowel pin should be at 9 o'clock. A normal small block chevy is 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock not the LT1(12 and 12).Look at shoe boxes site and go to the virtual cam timing thing. http://shbox.com/1/cam_timing_ani.gif

The pic that raroz28 is showing the engine is at #6 atdc. The dowel pin on cam is at 3 o'clock, should be at 9 o;clock.

Both dots at 12 o'clock (#1 TDC)

or

crank at 12 and cam at 6 (#6 TDC)

either way is perfectly fine.

If you lined the marks up like raroz28 shows you should be good. I don't think your timing chain is the problem because I had my chain installed wrong and it still ran but the headers did glow and it was weak. After I seen the headers glowing I took off the timing cover and found that the chain was off. The cam was at 6 and the crank was at about 4. Are you getting spark and gas?

ok tonight i took the cover off the distributor and set it like it was suppose to be and put everything back on and i went to start is and started up right away and i adjusted the valves so it should be good now. i got to pick up the sensor for the temp because mine broke off. and my gauge is not reading at all. so once i get that on i will drive it and see what it does. thanks to everyone who helped me with this it was a big help.and let me know ifanyone would happen to have some parts that will fit 94 z28.
