forgive me if this is a repost

i searched to try to find the similarities and differences of the 98-2002 ss and z28, and am finding a lot of conflicting info.

could you tell me what the differences are - engine/hp wise, body, etc etc.

The engines are 100% the same. The differences are:
Muffler and exhaust tips
Hood that helps channel air to the airbox (arguably)
32mm from sway bar on SS, 30 on Z28
Rear spoiler
17x9 wheels with 275/40/17 F1's on SS, 16x8 wheels with 245/50/16 tires (or 235/50/16).
Power steering cooler.

1998-1999 had most of the 1LE suspension except the Koni DA shocks. Early 2000 cars also had it, but only a very few. Later SS have the same suspension as the Z28 except the front sway bar.

Of course there were Y2Y options like Bilstein, dual/dual, KD's etc. that were available on the SS and not the Z28.

basically they are the same car.. just that SS has a hood and spoiler that noticably make it different.. engine is the same.. SS also gets a little different suspension.. nothign drastic.. SS also gets an exhaust.. again nothing worth the price.

There are more SS's made than Z28's.. so they arent more rare..

01-02 Z28 and SS get ZO6 clutch, LS6 intake and a few have a factory LS6 BLOCK..

Factory ratings are like 305 for 98-00 and 310 for 01-02.
I dynoed bone stock at 315.9 thats about 350 on my motor.. not too shabby...

SS gets 17" wheels and tires as well..

Not true. There are more base Z28 than SS, and technically all SS are Z28's with an option package.

Also, '98s and '99s have a different steering wheel than the '01 and '02s.

The newer models are available with radio controls on the wheel.

SS A4's came with 3.23's in the back stock.
Z28's came with 2.73 in the back stock. You could upgrade to 3.23's if you wanted.

not true chuck , in 01 there were fewer z's than ss's. only 4100 z that year making it third in least produced z of all time(with 67 first with 600 app. and 72 with 2000 app.). agreed that they are all z's when they leave the factory but when they leave slp there not and chevy dosen't classify them that way.

Ok, that is one year. We are discussing a 5 model year span, in which there were more Z28's than SS built. Care to place a wager? Also, the SS is actually a Z28/SS, and Chevy does classify it that way.

Actually, in the past they used to be.. but as of late, chevrolet has spun off the "SS" name to be their performance brand.. so the cars are all SS... Notice that the Z28 is no longer found on the SS car whereas the older Z28/SS had a both badges...


as for the model years.. I am sure i read where it was more than 1 year where the Z28 were fewer...

Check the SPI label of any '96+ SS, and I bet you will find option code Z28 along with WU8.

I have option codes on a large number of 1LE cars, and have yet to see WU8 without Z28.

Come on! Rarity is not the sole factor in determining a cars value. I like the SS. So I got one. You might like being mistaken for a V6 so that you get the stealth sleeper effect. To each his own. Who cares how many of each there are. The numbers are so close that it's a non-issue.

Enjoy the Z28. I'll enjoy the SS. When you see me on the road, wave and smile or give me the bird. I don't care. I'll just do the same and won't even get my heart rate up.

about the reply that all of the engines were the same from 98-02 well thats not entirely true, but for the most part it is. now lets not forget that in 00 they started putting the ls6 intake maifold and a different cam in the ls1.

my '99 SS title has it listed as a z28, it doesnt say anything about it being an ss.
c'mon, do you guys really see more ss's rolling around than z28's?!?!?! i know i dont. i see maybe one a month as opposed to 20+ ls1 z28's.
as far as "they arent worth the extra money", maybe not for you, but an ss will get more looks than a z28 anyday.

When they replaced the intake manifold they put a better one on when they replaced the cam they put a less aggresive one on so there aren't any real gains. Bottom line is that All LS1 cars (C5 included) put down relatively the same amout of RWHP. The SS looks cool (personal opinion) and has stuff to turn a little better.

Cmon Chuck and psychocabbage, you are arguing over 12 cars!!! It all depends on where you get your numbers from. If you search the web, diff numbers show up on diff sites. I think we all agree that f-bodies are great, the SS is just cool (IMHO) and the Z28 can do anything an SS can do. Can't we all just get along ?
