putting in LS1 into 96 camaro

Re: putting in LS1 into 96 camaro
I wouldn't do it, then you'll have to explain to everyone how you swapped the LT1 for an LS1. Everyone will think you're a moron if they don't understand you perfectly. LT4 would be way better for what you're going to have to do.

IMHO it's not worth it. It's expensive and involved. You'd be better off building your LT1 or buying an LS1. With the money you'll spend putting an LS1 into your LT1, you could have bought an LS1 car/motor.

I would have swapped it myself, but about 14 weeks or so ago I was
hit by a car on my ZRX 1200 Kawasaki. Bike is back together,
I am not.
The machine shop, King Balancing, recommended a mechanic they use
to put the long block in my Z28. He will let me supply as many new parts
as I can afford while the motor is being swapped. Cost of swap : $1300.00
So, with misc parts, about $4400.00
Sound like a good deal ? The LT1, again, will be completly stock with a
3 year warranty.
The urge to mod is strong with everything I drive/ride, but I have'nt
drove the Camaro for almost 9 months now. Still making payments though.
What you think ?
Thanks !
Ken

Let's just say I got tired of being screwed over on a Transmission deal, from someone local that came highly recommended...

Re: putting in LS1 into 96 camaro
You will basically need a complete 98-02 drivetrain (engine, transmission, PCM, wiring harness) and new K-member (engine cradle) with motor mounts. While at it, get the LS1 front suspension (different spring rates due to engine weight) and brakes (larger/better brakes). Fuel system will have to be modified - LT1 is a recirculated system with fuel pressure regulator in the engine compartment and vacuum compensation operating at 43.5psi, while the LT1 is a dead-end system, regulator back at the tank, no vacuum compensation operating at 58psi.
Best thing to do is get a 98-02 wreck with an intact front end, drop the drivetrain/K-member/suspension/brakes out from under the LS1 car, roll it under the LT1 and drop the body down on it. There is the question discussed in the thread above regarding whether the LT1 (93-97) hood fits over the LS1. I don't know the answer to that.

The hoods fit just fine with a stock style intake manifold.
As far as the fuel pressure regulator goes you can use a 97-04 Corvette fuel pressure regulator and blend it into the LT1 return style system fairly easily.

Re: putting in LS1 into 96 camaro
Wow, finally some acurate answers. The ls swap is very do able, I love mine. Its a 94. The slp lid wont fit under a stock hood. The core support is too tall. But the ls1 is no problem. Fuel systems can be tricky, I had a bit of trouble with mine but worked it out. I used the 98 lines from the donor and cut off and welded on my 94 gauge sender. The other fix is vette fuel rail/regulator with your 96 lines. Engine harness needs to be adapted to the car @ c 100 connector.
You will need the entire K frame, with rack and pinion. The stock 96 trans cross member will need to be modified. ( auto a4) the ls auto locates its mount 1 1/2 inches to the rear. The ls trans mount wont volt to your car.
I stretched the mounting points on mine to relocate it. But my buddy just welded a pearch onro his, and notched it where the pan contacted it.

I am doing the LS3 swap into my 94 Z28. I already have the kmember from a ls fbody. Do you have a auto? Any suggestion would be awesome.
I don't get why people say its impossible to do it.

Re: putting in LS1 into 96 camaro
The guy asked a question about the swap first off. A few of you are acting like its so difficult. People have LS motors in bmw, RX7 and stangs. So why do you think it would be a challenge in the same car.If you like being negative don't answer. Try and help the guy out.

Re: putting in LS1 into 96 camaro
I didn't feel like they were saying it is impossible. It can be a daunting task for anyone that is unfamiliar with these cars. Also playing in is a certain pride for us LT1 guys.
