Ls1 idling at 2,000 rpm after taking out if storage
Hey guys!
I have a buddy with a 1998 camaro Ls1 auto, fully stock about 50k miles on it. He went to take it out of storage today and the battery was completely dead. He boosted it with his truck and finally got it going! Unfortantely it was idling at 2,000rpm. He could just tap the gas and it would rev up to 3,000rpm then back down to 2,000? He HAD to move it so he slammed it into gear and it stayed at 2,000rpm. Is this a Safety feature if the battery is completely cooked?? He said the battery is fairly new. Any ideas or where to start? Throttle positioning sensor?

i dont think the tps itself could do it. you need the air to spin that fast, especially in gear. I would check for any vacuum leaks, as well as the iacv.

Yea, he's getting it towed home and that's the first thing I was going to do. Make sure that plunger type thing wasn't stuff in the TB. I guess we'll find out! Thanks guys

The same thing happened to my 98...I didn't drive it for about a month, the battery was fried but when it DID get started it wouldn't stop revving around 2 grand. Replaced the TPS and it ran fine after that. I also replaced the thermostat and flushed the coolant and put new in. It runs like a dream now! The TPS is about $34 so it's a cheap fix and it worked. Run the code to be sure but my money is on the TPS!!

I would say TPS but before that since it was sitting awhile there is a good chance that all that sludge from the ERG pooled at the bottom of the throttle body and is holding it open. My car has quite a few more miles on it then 50k but I ran into that problem. just pop off that clamp right before it and check it out, takes less then 1 min
