Hit brakes......defroster light comes on? WTF??!

SO i notcied tonight when i was out with some friends that if I press on the brakes, the defroster button comes on. It doesnt matter what gear the tranny is in, if the ebrake us up or down, or if im moving or sitting still. If I press on the brakes, the defroster light comes on. Now I've had the car for about 9 months and this is the first time I have noticed this. For some reason it doesnt seem right, but I thought I would check and see if anybody else has noticed the same thing. Anybody?

It definitly doesn't sound like an available option... ...I would start by inspecting the area around the brake pedal assembly and above under the dash and look for frayed, or crushed wires (ie...shorted wires). Good luck.

Does the defroster actually come on, or does the light just go on and off?

No worries, I agree its really odd. I will check for possible frayed/shorted wires in the morning, but I dont see how anything soulc have gotten damaged. All the wiring has never been tampered with or even touched for that matter. I dont have an owners manual so i cant check, but one thought i had was that i have a brake light out in the back and this is some sort of way of telling me that i do. Unfortunetly I dont have anybody that can sit in the car and hit the brakes for me while I check. I think everything is fine for the most part.......this is just pretty wierd.

Thats freaking funny. I've had weird problems with my car, but nothing like that. Is all your wiring stock? Have you put in an aftermarket stereo? I agree with them, check the wires.

Yes all the wiring is stock. The stereo is the stock monsoon that came with the car. I have never messed with any of the electronics.

have you had any work whatsoever done on the car just before this started happening? exhaust, anything? seen similiar problems when exhaust work done, they dont ground the chassis right and zap the cpu. does this apply to brakes!?! i dont know except maybe for the abs system may have taken a hit.

Re: Hit brakes......defroster light comes on? WTF??!

Hey Aklaim

I know this thread is VERY old. I have the same problem. I hit the brakes and the button comes on. Another thing i noticed is, when I push the defroster button manually, the defroster dont work, but the third brake light is turned on, which doesnt work when I hit the brakes, so there must be some kind of wiring problem.

Did you ever fix the problem? Or do another other person in here have a clue?

Unfortunately "Aklaim" has not visited this site since August 2009.

You can try sending him an e-mail. Left click on the screen name and there will be a "send e-mail to Aklaim" option in the drop down. No assurance that the e-mail address is even valid at this point.

What year is your car? We have access to some factory shop manuals.

Re: Hit brakes......defroster light comes on? WTF??!

The spoiler brake light makes sense since both those lines are in the hatch and probably share the same ground. That would make a circuit and give you that problem. always an option to run another ground or make sure the paint under it is sanded off to give a good connection. Or if the circuit was open to long and the wires got too hot on one side you could of melted a diode thus stopping the one way current and leaving it open to flow both ways but I am unaware of the exact set up of these systems, just ideas.
