Haven't started 2000 z28 in over 2 years...

Ok, so it has been sitting up for almost 2 years. I stopped driving it because it had a misfire from around 1500-3000 RPMs. I decided to mess with it today. I put a fresh battery in it and cranked right up! Surprised me on that one!!!

I have asked multiple people on any thoughts on what could be causing the misfire. I've heard anywhere from a coil(s), injectors, etc. I think it is a coil because it revs fine without load, but once driving the misfire starts.

What I am getting at... How much do shops generally charge to diagnosis and replace (if it is indeed a coil)? I don't have a code reader, but it always has the code light on anyway when I was driving it. It has a cam/valves etc and it just always was lit up after the swap. BTW its a v8 swap/ECU from a 2000 z to a 98 v6.

Also, what is the best way to clean an engine bay? Pics below. I have always been afraid of spraying the engine with water, etc. Good ole scrub down?

Cory

Re: Haven't started 2000 z28 in over 2 years...

Any recommendation on brand of coil pack? If I don't use OEM and go with something like MSD... should I swap out all 8 or just the one that is bad?

People are using stock coils for 1,000+ HP setups..... more than adequate. I have had 8 of the stock LS1 coils on my 800 HP nitrous LT1 for 14 years with no problems.

You can get the ELM327 (
Amazon.com: iSaddle Super Mini Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Scan Tool Check Engine Light & CAN-BUS Auto Diagnostic Tool for Windows & Android Torque (Blue Color, Super Mini): Automotive Amazon.com: iSaddle Super Mini Bluetooth OBD2 OBDII Scan Tool Check Engine Light & CAN-BUS Auto Diagnostic Tool for Windows & Android Torque (Blue Color, Super Mini): Automotive
) for $15 and download the torque free app, then you can pull codes and even datalog.

Once you do that fixing the car will be 1000X easier.

get the thing scanned you have a "service engine light on" that might point you to your problem, the coils are extremely unlikely what's more likely are your spark plugs.

After you scan for codes, try fresh plugs. Then swap coils to see if the miss follows it to that cylinder. Check for clogged/dirty MAF/Air Filter.

Then maybe look into a compression test, etc

If you can't sort it out...lmk..I've got another chassis I can test the swap in ;-)

Re: Haven't started 2000 z28 in over 2 years...

It is running again! Threw a P0200 and a P0332 code while on the interstate and massive amounts of whitish smoke filled the interstate. sucks but was kind of funny (smoke wise). Did it all the way home 2 or 3 days ago. Now today I drove it for 40 min and nothing. perfect. I never went past half gas, and she behaved great. The other day I was getting on it a bit.. still not WOT but close and she didnt like that...

Any suggestions, but as of right now she is running great!

that would worry me.

and if you cant go above 50% throttle I'd say things are less than "perfect"

dig deep and find the data to help diagnose it. and get some fresh high octane gas in it

good luck

Re: Haven't started 2000 z28 in over 2 years...

After looking up those codes, it looks like you're having fuel injector problems. I don't know which one. The P0200 is stating the PCM isn't detecting the correct voltage when the Injector is activated or deactivated (this doesn't mean the injector isn't getting proper power, it means the PCM is stating the injector isn't being properly triggered..or in essence when it expects to see the injector on, it is not, vice versa for off.) The white smoke may be you running too lean on fuel, which is why you're misfiring.

P0332 is a knock sensor error, this is fairly normal under any circumstance which you have a significant misfire. It's the knock sensor telling the PCM that its detecting detonation.

First, just check connections at the fuel injectors. If that doesnt work you're going to have to pinpoint which injector / injectors are faulty.

ANOTHER POSSIBILITY

You MAY have bad front O2 sensors, O2 sensors replicate these very similar symptoms as well, only thing is you wouldn't notice them during cold starts.
