well i think my 2000 Ls1 might have oil consumption problem..i check the oil level and it was about half on the dip stick and i driven 700 plus miles and i have lost half a quart of oil....now that ways to much in my book...iam not sure if when i got my oil change that the dealership only put 5 quarts in it...but i check it and it was close to full...but when i change my oil before it took 5.5 quarts of oil....well now its full and iam going to keep track of how much oil i loose...how much oil do people in this forum loose from their LS1?? and i was wondering if i brought my car to the dealer ship and yes my car is covered by the warranty will they give me a hard time..or will they test my car and replace those piston rings? has anyone gotten their piston rings replaced yet from the dealership? how was it and suggestion or comments.......thanks

I am not sure, but it seems like GM says 1 quart/ 1000 miles is "normal" useage.

Mine seems to be eating it @ the rate of about 1/2 qt per 2000 miles with synthetic 10/30.

Ehh - liveable withable , I guess.

Helps keep the exhaust from rusting !!

That's why I keep a 5 quart jug of Mobile1 on the shelf in my garage. My oil consumption is "normal" (a quart every 1,100 miles or so)

Every Saturday when I wash the car, I check the oil level. I usually top it off every 2 weeks or so.

Annoying as hell .....

I guess I got lucky, my 2001 only uses about .5-.75 quart per 3000 miles. The Camaro doesn't lose any with street driving, but will eat a 1/2 quart in a weekend of road racing.

ehh, i thought these ls1's were two strokes the way mine sucks oil, 1-2 qts every 1000, of mobil 1 10w30. it does depend on how i drive though, if i cruise on the highway in 6th, consumption is low, but if i run it hard it really sucks the oil down. gm will try to get out of putting rings in them any way possible

There is a TSB on this item so the dealer should know the process. They change the oil and document the mileage to start with a good reference point, then you go back to the dealer evry 500 miles for them to check the oil. They do a few cycles like this to determine the consumption rate. This will be the justification for changing the rings.

The milage range is l quart in 400-600 miles, I work at a chevy dealership. The bulletin says it is usually occurs in manual transmission cars because they are typically shifted at 3200 rpms or higher, that is where you will see worse oil consuption. When your car meets these standards they will keep track of your oil consuption at weekly intervals and replace pistons rings if needed...

hmmmm, they have you come back at 500 mile intervals, what stops someone from draining a 1/2 quart or so plus the normal consumption to make it look like consumption is up, and get the rings put in.

My '98 doesn't use very much oil at all.Maybe < .5 quart in 3,000 miles.I use a little more when I hit the dragstrip though.

we wouldnt know if you drained oil or not, but, I personally wouldnt want rings put in my car if I didnt need them, there always seems to be new rattles and noises from your car on major repairs. Plus you dont know how well trained your technician is either. I would only have it done if It was a big problem;. jmo

I know this is an old topic but my wife's 98 uses a quart every 650-900 miles. The dealer has been doing a consumption test and today we asked where we go from here. They said they can pull it apart but if they don't find anything wrong, we pay the bill! No way I'm going to trust these guys on a deal like that.

Do any of you have any documentation from GM regarding at what rate of useage is covered? Has anybody else been made this same offer? Has anyone had their rings replaced and had it fix the problem?

Mine doesnt use a drop although its a A4 with 2.73. CARSON96Z28 is dead on with his last post. I am a ASE certified tech and I see some of the work people do, unless its over a quart per 1000 I would leave it.

My 99 uses about half a quart every 3000 miles, but like Snowmann mines A4 with 2.73. But I am by no means easy on the car.

Higher Than Expected Oil Consumption
(Replace Rings)

Models:
1999-2001 Chevrolet Camaro, Corvette
1999-2001 Pontiac Firebird
with 5.7L Engine (VINs G, S - RPOs LS1, LS6)

Condition

Some owners may comment on higher than expected oil consumption. When checked, the oil consumption could be in the range of 400-600 miles per quart (700-1000 km/L).

Cause

The cause for this condition may be an interaction between the piston rings and the cylinder bore in vehicles that are operated at higher RPMs - typically manual transmission vehicles driven in a manner where the engine is frequently or consistently operating at greater than 3200 RPM.

Correction

A new set of piston rings is currently available through GMSPO. The new rings are part of a complete piston ring kit. Install only the number 2 compression ring and the oil expander ring from the piston ring kit. All other rings in the piston ring kit should be discarded. The original number 1 compression ring and the oil ring rails should be re-used in their original positions on the piston. All pistons should be used in the same cylinder bore.

Important: Do not dress or hone the cylinder bore. Nothing should be done to change the bore finish for this condition. Changing the bore finish may aggravate the condition.

Refer to the Unit Repair Manual for appropriate ring removal and replacement procedure.

The number 1 compression ring and the upper and lower oil expander rails are re-used because they are already broken in for the bore that they are in. The new number 2 compression ring is made with a very sharp edge that will break in quickly.

Changing only the piston rings noted, with no change in driving style, should change oil consumption to an acceptable level. Changes in driving style that reduce the amount of time spent at higher RPMs will also positively effect oil consumption.

In addition to the standard size piston ring kit listed below, a 0.25 mm oversized piston ring kit is available. The oversized piston ring kit should only be used in those rare instances where the cylinder bore size has been machined larger to accommodate the 0.25 mm oversized piston rings.
