Anyone know if it would be hard to smog a 74 vega with a LS1?
I am about to buy a 74 vega at a very good price but I am wondering if it would be possible to make it smog legal with an LS1.. Would the aftermarket kits that are available allow all the emission controls? The car is a drag car right now with a small block and I want to drive it on the street. I can't drive it on the street without a smog certificate So anyways, thanks for your time

actually are you sure that 74 still needs to be smogged still ?? Last I heard that beginning Jan. 2003, that cars either 74 or 76 or older no longer needed to be smogged... I don't know if it is true or not but I have heard it from my smog guy....
If you still have to smog that vega, just install the LS1 w/ computer and fuel injection... And if the car came with a Cat, install it and then take it to a smog referee and they should pass it w/ no problems because you installed a clean burning engine on top of running Fuel Injection as well... A friend of mine did a Vortech TBI engine, into a 83 1 Ton P/U and the Smog Ref passed, just has to be able to blow numbers out the tail pipe as a stock Vega from 74, should not be that difficult to do...

Depends on your state, but most states would require a swap to conform to the year of the chassis or the year of the engine.... whichever is newer.
So... that would mean LS1 specs. which shouldn't be a big deal if you keep all of the systems.

The reason why Ca is so strict on engine swaps, was for the fact back in the early to mid 70's, people were buying new cars and trucks and back in those days, Cali had a law that stated if for example you bought a 75 Corvette and put in a 60 Big Block in that 75 Vette, the 75 Vette would not have to be smogged as long as the engine was from a car or truck that was smog exempt... Well it seemed that too many people were doing the swaps that CA, decided to change the law...
I do know that if you take a newer for example a 96 1500 Truck that has a 4.3L V6 and decide to swap in a Vortec 350, the truck needs to have everything that a 96 V8 Truck came with in order for it to pass smog by a referee.... So if 74 cars and trucks need to be smogged still, then swapping in an LS1 should not be that much of a hassle as long as he can add all the smog equipment...
