at the top of the hood... LT1 camaro. i'm tired of small leaves and junk going in there. can it just pull air from the dashboard and work that way?

The vent system needs access to outside air.

Not really, the recirc position just recirculates the air inside the car, personally, I'd retrofit a cabin air filter

agreed, this is the "max a/c" setting on our cars, in theory, when on that setting, it shouldn't pull from the outside vent at all, thus solving your problem. Defrost (which is needed) MAY blend with outside air, which is where you would run into trouble if you completely defeat your cowl vents. There is no recirc for heat or defrost.

Hopefully, with no outside fresh air, you won't have downed a couple bean burritos the night before.......

Why not just rig up a fine mesh screen directly under the vent slots?

thanks all, good ideas. defrost would be a problem. For AC i just use max or nothing and the windows for more air.. Fine mesh and a possible retrofit cabin air filter would be great!

looks difficult... i found this Add Cabin Air Filter to 4th Gen for less than $20 - Dodge Ram Forum - Ram Forums and Owners Club! - Dodge Truck Forum

i'll check the tech manuals, i've got 1 and 2 for the 94 camaro. Dave or y'all have you ever seen a cabin air filter retrofit in a 4th gen? you could sell that, i'd be the first customer

Yes, really. You'd hate it if you ONLY had recirculated air ALL the time. Fresh, outside air needs to be brought in to make sure no fumes are trapped in the cabin. Even when the vent system is off, a small amount of outside air filters inside for air exchange. GM cars have had this feature for decades. Recirculate is only one position and none of the other positions use it. It is only used to help cool the cabin more easily when the outside temperature is very high (you further cool already cooled air).

So, the vent system needs access to outside air, if you are actually going to vent anything.
