Can a dealership make a new key without having one to go by and without the car being there? I read they can call gm for the info and make one.

They should be able to make one with the VIN supplied. You will have to prove ownership.

I had one made before. The dealer just has to have the tool. When I went in they pulled the code for the cut of the key, then he had some handheld clipper type thing he would set and then cut the key. It wasnt made like a normal house key at home depot. Could have just been this particular dealer though.

Cost about 40 bucks, and I had to provide ID and current registration.
