Underhood Insulation

Underhood Insulation
Is it safe to remove the insulation pinned to the underside of the hood? Mines all nasty and ugly lookin and i wouldnt mind just tossing it in the garbage. Will it do any damage or make the paint on my hood blister or anything?

Re: Underhood Insulation
I've removed mine and havent had any problems....think about it though, the aftermarket hoods don't have this insulation (I think it is just for sound and maybe just as a precautionary measure for the heat).

Re: Underhood Insulation
I removed mine for car shows and also painted the underside of the hood with gloss black ceramic coat paint. This should help keep some of the heat off and it looks a lot nicer than the natty insulation

Re: Underhood Insulation
Ripped mine off without any problems..Infact it looks ten times better after I cleaned the underside of the hood, it matches (obviously) the Teal paint of my car and when the hood is open looks great!
I imagine it was mainly for quieting the motor for appealing purposes..you know how they are from the factory..quieter, softer, etc..(crappier IMO)! Just to appeal to some of the less 'accelerator-heavy' buyers (eh hem..) who buy the car to show-boat..not to be fast and loud. Also I have heard that about the fire thing..its supposedly a fire retardant or something, smothers the engine bay if a fire were to arise (which would explain the brittleness of the material). You probobly cant clean it with ease..its so brittle and warn over time that it would most likely weaken it.
Just take it off..the hood cant get that much hotter from the engine bay without it..than direct sunlight for hours at a time! Those hoods can reach VERY hot temps in the sun even with wax and clear coat and stuff.
I vote for you to rip it off! (keep the tabs though..if you ever wanna buy a new one/get one from a junkyard you'll have them already).

Re: Underhood Insulation
i took mine off and havn't had any problems.
my dad bought his 2000 Z28 brand new and his doesn't have it. unless the dealership took it off for some reason. i know he didn't remove it, he never opens his hood.

Re: Underhood Insulation
Thanks for the replies guys, i was just thinking it might fade or bubble the paint. I thought fiberglass hoods would dissipate the heat a bit better so they didnt really need one. Now to go rip it off
