Transaxle?

I have a quick basic question. What exactly is a transaxle? Is it just a transmission incoorporated into the axles. If so what is the advantage to this and I have heard that the corvette has one, is that true?

Yes the corvette uses one. It combines a rear end and transmission all in one to help even out weight distribution.

Here is a cutaway of an auto.

And here and here is what it looks like mounted in the car.

BTW this thread will probably get moved.
