Re: temp gauge broken?

You need to run a 50/50 mix of coolant. That raises the boiling temperature, and prevents boiling in the radiator or engine.

You can buy a hydrocarbon test kit at an auto parts store. Works in water or in the 50/50 mix. It is used to determine if the head gasket is leaking, forcing combustion products into the coolant.

Re: temp gauge broken?

I took it to pep boys and the guy did a carbon monoxide test. He said it was supposed to turn yellow and it didn't. Then he said it's a blown head gasket just by looking at it.
He said there's no pressure in the hose.

Re: temp gauge broken?

A head gasket leak leading to loss of coolant is going to contaminate the coolant with combustion gasses. Hard to rationalize the fact that he found no CO, but by looking at "it" (whatever "it" is) he determined it's a leaking head gasket. Was "it" the coolant, and did he see an excessive amount of bubbling in the coolant?

He said there is no pressure in what hose?

Might want to read this for more info:

How to Test for Head Gasket Failure

Re: temp gauge broken?

The water in the radiator was bubbling. But all he did was say that and the no pressure in the hoses was a definite head gasket

Re: temp gauge broken?

The problem was fixed and simple. The radiator was just very dirty.

I do have another issue though. My clutch was bad and my girl's cousin looked at it and he sid he can replace the clutch for $625. Then he says he cant because the brakes are bad and he can't test it.

I think this guy is jerking me around. The brakes work fine. I even just put a brand new brake line on and bled the brakes, but he insists the car is locking up.

.
Might want to avoid using Pep Boys for your mechanical work in the future.
