Tach not working?

Hello, all well on my way to work the other day a car cuts me off as i am doing about 45mph. I slam on my breaks and then once the car clears i look down at my tach and its not moving. Its hovering at like 200 rpms. Once i got to work i shut my car off and restarted it to see if that made a difference none what so ever. The needle did drop to 0 once i shut the car off however. Then about 12hrs late once i got out of work i started the car up and the tach worked fine. This has happened to me before but the tach usually restored itself after like 2mins of driving. Anyone have any ideas? I know the tach is electrical so my guess is a loose wire. However, i dont really want to have to tear my dash apart to get to it. Whats your guys take? Thanks
