Supporting Engine with a jack?

Im in the middle of doing a crossmember swap, and have the old one ready to come out, and the new one is all ready to go in. I was planning on renting an engine hoist, but was wondering if it would be safe to support the engine with a jack and a peice of wood under the oil pain for the 30 minutes its going to take. I think I had it up for longer than that when i was doing my headers.

Should i just go rent the hoist or save the $50 and buy some beer/steak when im done?

Yeah that will be fine. Just make sure that the wood is wider than the pan bottom so it will be supported on the outter edges of the pan and not the center of it. When I pulled my trans out for clutch R&R I noticed that the jackstand under the pan wasent even touching, the exhaust was actually holding the engine's weight. I wouldnt recommend doing it that way though. Good luck.
