Is SS worth it?

I would like a LS1 Camaro and seeing that there are fewer SS made is it really worth it if I intend to modify it? How many of the parts that make it an SS would just be replaced with a goal of high elevens in mind?

Re: Is SS worth it?

An SS and a Z28 have the same drive train only difference is exhaust.

11's can be had with a cam and bolt ons. Stock LS1's are capable of High 12's low 13's

Re: Is SS worth it?

SS means SS appereance, You'll get more respect with just having an SS, but a Z28 is just as fast

Hell, with a 6spd LS1, Airlid,Exhaust, gears and a 150 shot....HELLO 11's

Re: Is SS worth it?

I'd give my left nut for an LS1 SS. My brother-in-law's selling his (just bought a house) and it's a '99 with only about 14,000 miles on it. It's in MINT condition.

I ****ing love that car....6-speed....T-tops.....all for $17,000. (he really would rather not sell it, lol)

Re: Is SS worth it?

here is what is different with a SS:

Exhaust
hood is different, of course.
rims & tires
spoiler
suspension
rearend
emblems
floor mats

I'm not sure how the LS1 cars were treated for options with rearends and suspension. I know LT1 SSs could get an upgraded rearend and different levels of suspension tuning.

If the SS is what you want, it is a good deal to buy one. To build one from a Z28 would require more money in parts than the price difference to a SS.

It is the appearance performance package. This comes up in every thread about Z28 vs. SS because many would like to over look the non appearance modifications, most notably the difference in suspension, especially in the years up to 2000 and yes the suspension difference is notable do a search if you want the specs on the big difference on most years.

Re: Is SS worth it?

Anything you do a Z28 by adding lookalike SS parts all you are going to get is a poor looking Clone. Even if you yourself like the Clone look thats all its going to be. My opinion.

Re: Is SS worth it?

Well all SS were Z28's and SLP just bolted on parts so whats the difference if I did that? I think I would just get an Z28 and put on the aftermarket LCA subframes and panhard rod and that stuff instead of searching for and SS since it would be harder because of their rarity compared to the Z28.

Re: Is SS worth it?

One word about Factory SS models done by SLP. And that word was FACTORY. But if you want a clone go for it.

Re: Is SS worth it?

Spend the extra bit and buy an SS. Im totally happy that i went with the SS over the Z28. Wasnt even really a SS is faster than Z28 issue, but you get more attention, and definatly more looks in an SS. Whatever you do, make sure that you buy what you want. 12-15 thousand bucks is alot for a car that you really just settled for ya know?

The difference is that SLP is a factory parts supplier for GM. Cars were shipped there directly from the factory and before they ever saw a dealer. The modifications made by SLP were considered factory modifications, not like some Joe Schmoe got a Z and did it himself. The cars are registered with SLP and GM as SS's. They get special dash plaques and build numbers.

It is impossible to truely replicate all this. You can spend money trying, but it will never really be a SS and it will likely cost more than the price difference between a comparable Z and a real SS.

Re: Is SS worth it?

If you can afford it, go for it. The apperence mods are nice, but the bigger wheels and tires and the stiffer suspension is where the SS has the real adavantage over the Z28. I could have bought an SS when I got my car. However it would have been an 80k+ miles, ragged on, etc. Or I could have a very clean 30,000 mile Z28 for the same money.

Re: Is SS worth it?

Worth every penny because of the looks. The added SLP stuff is just a bonus to me. I was lucky enough to get one with every GM/SLP option except the extra set of ZR1 rims and tires.
